how knitting changed my life

my husband and i grew up in western new york but when the recession hit in the 1980's, we were without employment for nine months and had to leave the area. i was an avid knitter, but when we ended up in west central florida, i just gave it up. we lived there for 22 years, all the time making plans for moving back to western new york to renew relationships with friends and family as well as looking forwward to enjoying four seasons once again and small-town life. that opportunity came this past summer and we are living in hamburg, new york, now. one of the first things i did was to look up knitting shops in the area as i wanted to get started right away on making sweaters, shawls and blankets for our family and friends. i had missed knitting in florida as the heat just made it impossible for me to even think about it! i finally found a small shop called embraceable ewe in our town, immediately signed up for classes and bought lots of yarn. what a life-changing experience! we have not only renewed our relationships with family and friends from our childhoods, but we now have a circle of new friends through the yarn shop. the shopowner, erin kosich, has numerous events for us to just get together to knit and converse including "help nights" where we can get help from erin's grandma genevieve, finish that project pot lucks, summer knitting on the victorian porch of the shop, and numerous classes where we learn many new skills. she and her husband, tony, even have classes on fridays twice a month where tony cooks us dinner! there are always homemade snacks for us to enjoy, too. once a month, she has "ewenight" where she teaches us a new skill and there are raffles, show and tell, etc. there is such a feeling of family and any trepidations of "you can't go home" have been totally dissipated because of erin and the ewe crew. i have made so many friends and even found some other transplantees from florida who just wanted to come back to western new york for the same reasons we did. my skills have returned and have grown at a remarkable rate. i feel my confidence grow and love the feeling of family at the yarn shop. my husband has become part of that family, too, as we associate with erin and tony through the shop's various events.
