Knitting and Crocheting Gave Me Back A Working Arm
Created By: Sharon Miller

On January 13, 2001 at 9:30 a.m. I broke my arm when I slipped on a patch of invisible ice while on the way to Shabbat services at my synagogue. I ended up in the emergency room that day and in surgery four days later. My surgeon told my husband that on a scale of 1 to 8 with 8 the worst, I was a 7 verging on an 8. The injury was similar to one suffered by a race-car driver who hit the wall at 180mph. After surgery came physical therapy or occupational therapy to regain function in my hand, wrist and arm. One day, I asked my therapists if I could knit and crochet. They said go for it! So I did. I started by knitting a simple scarf and then I crocheted squares that I joined into an afghan for my daughter. When she became engaged the following spring, I knitted her face veil! It was the first time I knitted lace and I finished it in time for her wedding. I haven't looked back. There is yarn in almost every room in my house and my husband has gotten used to me either knitting or crocheting when we take long car trips. I am also a member of a group that is part of a program making lap blankets for a local nursing home. Knitting and crocheting has not only given me hours of pleasure but it has given me back an arm that is almost 100% functional. My surgeon didn't think I could do things like raise my arm over my head. My knitting and crocheting helped me do that and more.
