yarns of love
Created By: DS Poster
Crocheting has been a part of my life since mid teen years, so a while. I love doing it, but since I became disabled and not really having much resources for doing it I was really missing it.
Right before Christmas,2006, I finally came upon an idea. I can't work and desperately miss it, so I thought I would try and post on a sharing website that is local, if anyone had left over yarn they didn't need. I also contacted that shelter, to see if they would be interested in these scarves, they asked how many, told them I hope, if donations hold out to have at least 100 scarves for them next fall. He said yes, and why? Told him, it's cold, and I thought it may be uplifting to the people who use the shelter to get something that was hand-made and that a stranger was thinking of them, and wishing the best for them as making it. He was astonished.
I was going to start making scarves for the homeless shelter here in North Dakota. So I got the rectangular loom of Knifty Knitter and started working on it.
The response I got from people with yarn netted me over 5 large boxes of yarn!!
When I am able I sit and make the scarves, and now started some hats and some matching sets. I have made over 20 scarves and 10 hats so far, and I hope to start some mittens soon too.
When I share my project with others on line, I hear other friends say, they are going to do that, they love to crochet/knit and don't have any projects to work on. Some are going to ship them to me, and some are going to give them to their local shelters.
It gives me great pleasure when I am sitting working on the items, thinking of whom may get them, etc. I hope to include a little note with each scarf telling them I made these scarces/hats for them right in this town, hope they help fight our bitter winters.
As my favorite saying is: it isn't important to do great things in life, but to do small things with great love. Although these scarves and hats are small in regard to the issues of homelessness, it may just give the victim of homelessness a little boost of love.
