Being a new resident in New York City, I was...
Created By: Cynthia Hoffman
Being a new resident in New York City, I was floundering with trying to find something worthwhile to do. After learning to knit 2 1/2 years ago, I discovered that I was pretty good at showing others how to do it.
With that new skill discovery, I became involved in a resident for homeless, un-wed, pregnant teens. So now every Thursday afternoon, I spend 2 hours teaching the girls how to knit so they can make a blanket for their babies.
In a effort to insure each girls leaves with a blanket once they delivery their baby, I have now recruited and taught many of my friends to knit squares and donate them to the girls. This allows me to present each girl with a completed blanket no matter how many squares they have completed.
During the process of 1 1/2 years of teaching at this resident, I have learned that knitting isn't the important thing to these young ladies, it is the time that we spend with them that counts. Learning to knit is a bonus. In addition, they learn that knitting is a skill that they can use the rest of their lives and it makes them proud to have actually contributed a hand made item for their baby.
