Knitting Helped Me Beat PPD
Created By: Jenny McJannet
When I was 28, I gave birth to my first baby(ies)--fraternal twin girls. Having two babies to take care of all at one time was incredibly overwhelming. And I became very depressed, no doubt suffering from post-partum depression. I had family in town who helped take care of my children, and I started taking antidepressants and saw a psychiatrist once a month. But it just wasn't enough. The medication didn't help nearly as much as I hoped it would. I was still over-tired, over-worked & worse, suffered from intense feelings of panic and anxiety. I would sit in my living room in the wee hours of the morning, watching my beautiful daughters, feeling anxious and restless. So I turned to knitting. I just wanted SOMETHING to do that would occupy some time--and make the day seem a little faster. Being a stay-at-home mom, the days can drag on if you're not busy. I wasn't a great knitter, to start with anyway. I would sit with a project and tell myself, "finish two rows...just two rows." And soon enough, two rows would turn to 20, and 20 to 60, and so on and so on. Pretty soon I'd knit two whole baby sweaters. And many scarves. A poncho for myself. A sweater for my mother. A prayer shawl for a sister-in-law's sister who was battling cervical cancer. And before long I found there was no need to take antidepressants. No need to see psychiatrists. Because I was no longer depressed. I was no longer anxious or panicky or restless. My only anxiety was wondering how I'd ever have enough hours in my life to finish ALL the knitting projects I was planning to do! I can knit wherever I am--doctor's office waiting rooms, watching my nephews play soccer, watching a movie in the evening with my family. And what's even better is that my 4-year-old daughters are fascinated by mommy's knitting. They beg me daily to teach them to knit! They can't wait to be old enough to learn how to "make things" like mommy does. I've been able to make beautiful things for my family to wear. Beautiful gifts to give away for any occasion. And my knitting ability has improved tenfold. I am now an accomplished, experienced knitter--who's not afraid to try any new pattern or stitch! What started as a forced task, something to take my mind off my daily drudgery, has now become my greatest joy. A day without knitting for me would be like a day without air. It simply can't exist. And Lion Brand yarns have been there throughout. Your yarns are beautiful, affordable & a magnificent quality. Better still, the free patterns I find on your website have been a wonderful resource. I turn to that website all the time for information and inspiration. Knitting literally saved my life...and I hope it will for other new moms as well. --Jenny McJannet
