Helping Others
Created By: A Akia

My grandmother taught me how to crochet when I was nine years old. I never imagined that i would continue to use this gift that she had passed on to me. It has now been been eighteen years since I learned and I am still crocheting.

I now manage one of the branches of the Hartford Public Library and have taught many people with the help of an older woman from my community named Maxine Reese how to crochet. Togather, we have taught children as young seven years old and adults as old as seventy how to crochet. Some of the individuals that we have taught have used crochet as a platform to give back to others in the community. Some of the projects that learners have gone on to complete are making hats and scarves for homeless indidviduals who visit the soup kitchen at their church, making blankets for their teen group, making shawls for family members and creating hats for younger children in the branch, as well as, making scarves for co-workers.

i am very thankful for my grandmother, Ms. Reese, and all of the community members who not only participated in the crochet programs, but also helped to make a difference in other people's lives.
