Bickie's Bears
Created By: Victoria Drennan
A lot of folks think crocheting as a hobby or a way to pass the time but my crocheting has evolved into something a little larger. I have been crocheting since I was 12 when my great grandmother taught me how to make my first granny square. After that, I was "hooked". I have a pretty stressful job and I find crocheting relaxing. I starting crocheting little teddy bears and giving them away at Christmas to hospitals, shelters and children's homes. I have received a lot of wonderful letters from kids and judges and directors from children's programs. My favorite story was from the director of the local Hospice. I had taken two large bags of bears and dropped them off. She called me a few days later to thank me for the bears and to let me know how much they appreciated being able to give a bear to a child in hospice care or a child with a parent in hospice care to hold on to.
She also shared a story of an elderly woman who had been ill for about 6 months. They gave her one of my bears and from that day on, the woman kept the bear with her. The woman loved the bear so much, when she passed her daughter buried the bear with her.
This story has taught me a little time and a few dollars in materials can give such joy to others and the joy has been returned in the wonderful stories.
