I am the site director of a before and after...
Created By: Joyce Cartina

I am the site director of a before and after school program for the YMCA. I was doing some crocheting for myself one day when one of the children asked if I could teach them. I brought in some extra sport weight yarn and hooks that I had at home and got them started. (By the end of the school year, a 4th grade girl had finished a queen size afghan for her father in red, white and blue as he had just become a U.S. citizen, and a 5th grade boy made an afghan and scarf for his little sister for her birthday) One of the children was very interested in learning, but just couldn't get the hang of crocheting. He had A.D.D. and crocheting did not give him the "instant gratification" that he wanted. I brought in my circular knitting looms and started him making a hat. Within 2 rows, he could see what was forming! Two weeks later, his mother bought him his own set of looms and he made stocking hats for his entire family for Christmas. A teacher of his came and visited us to find out about this "knitting" and has now started others in her group with knitting and crocheting. She says that it helps with their eye-hand coordination and also helps to calm them when the world starts going to fast. So far this year, I have taught 10 new children how to knit and crochet and we made scarves and hats that we donated to a local homeless shelter during the Christmas season. By the way, they are all BOYS!
