The Way Home
Created By: Kathy Hamby
Knitting is a lifesaver for me, literally and figuratively. I have knitted off and on until this summer now I carry my knitting with me everywhere I go. Why the change? Last summer I was fighting some major life changes, retirement, returning to school and alcoholism. I thought everything was great except for being depressed and moody. I had gotten to the point in my life where I had a drink when ever I was going somewhere or doing something. My son and husband confronted me about the problem butit took a major wake up call for me to get the message. I had gone on an archeological dig for three weeks, one without alcohol. I brought my knitting as we were going tobe out in the middle of nowhere and I thought it would be something to do in the evening. It is a good thing I brought it I found out that I had a bit of a problem living without alcohol and the knitting soothed my nerves. After the trip, I decided to check into this alcohol thing and with help of a wonderful counselor and my knitting I am clean and sober and have been since last summer. Why did knitting help, it seems I am very nervous about being in social situations and I had used the alcohol to mask my fear. Now, I bring my knitting to many functions and have mastered being socially active without resorting to alcohol or drugs. I have joined a knitting group at the university, The Kniitting Knanooks (University of Alaska Fairbanks). We knit as a social outlet and for various groups which need knitted items such as Newborns in Need. Through knitting I have found a wonderful life, one of social responsibility and beautiful friends and family members who benefit from my new hobby with wonderful Lion Brand socks, sweaters and hats. I have found my artistic and creative side and I have learned to enjoy people and life.
