The Desire to Learn to Knit
Created By: Valli Blaydon
I remember as a child seeing my Italian Grandmother sitting on our sofa knitting away. I, as a young shy girl would watch in admiration of how she could make a string into a beautiful vest or lace doily. WOW, wish I could do that, I would think to myself. Unfortunately there was a big language barrier and I was unable to ask her to teach me. She passed away when I was 10 years old. Whenever I think of her, I think of her knitting. I was amgry with myself for not trying to learn from her. I didn't know anyone who could knit so, I decided to buy a book and teach myself. It took some trying but, after about a year, I think I became fairly good. I have made some squares for 'Warm up America' and make things for my family. I love knitting and everytime I pick up my needles, I think of my Grandmom and feel a connection with her that I never had before and I think of how proud she would be of me.
