Crochet and Me
Created By: C Carma
When I was a little girl around six years old we moved into a not finished house in a mid size town in the West. I remember watching my Mom crochet just about every day (she made a double beadspread out of size 30 white thread and it took her seven years to do it) We always had white, starched doilies in the house. She made so many things. Then as an impatient teenager she wanted to teach me how to crochet. So I finally said okay and was mildly interested and tried to make a chain and ended up throwing it across the room and said never again. Well that happened a few more times and she said to me "You have to be patient and you will learn to be just that". Little did I know that would be a life lesson for me in almost every area of my life. I gradually lost interest, boys were more important at the time. But I still made Granny squares with my sisters encouragement. Then I picked up a book again in the 1980's and started thread crocheting these little drawstring bags and took one to work and pretty soon all the girls wanted one. Well then I haven't stopped crocheting since and have made alot of things but not a bedspread that took seven years. The craft has not only taught me patience, but has helped me be creative. To imagine something that isn't there, but can be made. Also it is very relaxing and rewarding in the end is a thing of beauty that my hands created with just a hook and thread or yarn. I have taught my stepdaughters and Granddaughter and she is still working on the patience part, she is so much like me. I was so fortunate to have my Mom teach me, she learned out of an old crochet book when she was in Germany at the end of the war. Thank you Mom for teaching me what I love so much.
