Self Help Therapy 101
Created By: Ruth Atkinson

Sometimes lifes tragic events turn our lives upside down and we feel lost and broken. The world is buzzing around us and we're just standing motionless, wondering why everyone and everything is functioning so normally when we can't.
My mother taught me to knit when I was 5yrs old, I loved making little scarves, shawls and blankets for my dolls. Then as the years passed, so did my interest in dolls and knitting.
It must be about almost 10years since my life was changed one very routine day by a horrible accident to my husband. He survived and after years of therapy he's doing well and so are our children, who are young teenagers now.
While searching on the internet in the early hours of the morning (as sleeping became difficult without medication), I found the Lion Brand knitting website, full of wonderful colored yarns, free patterns rangeing from beginer to intermediate.
I impusively bought some, but it was so hard to choose a color, so I got several...Scarfs were really "in", and once I started I couldn't stop! There were so many that I hard to start giving them away as gifts.
Then baby clothes, they were really fun to make as it only took a few days, along with afgans, dishcloths, eventually "big needle" sweaters.
Life was fun again, I was going a little crazy according to my kids...I found Micheals craft stores wonderful, they had classes for everything.
It opened up a whole new world, I could relax again, I learned scrapbooking and went crazy cropping photos and making albums, kids school albums, vacation albums, baby books for friends.
Now I've learned felting...my little craft room is filling up with felted purses, knitting bags, cat toys. I've meet the most interesting people and discovered that knitting is wonderful therapy, especially during the gloomy days of winter and the colors brighten up people as well!
Teaching friends and family to knit is a little challenging but I found the kids love all the looms you can buy now, I don't need to be as patient with them as the patterns are easy to follow. Knitting isn't just for Grandma's in armchairs, it's great for everyone, the homeless benefit from hats, scarfs and mittens, newborns in Zambia get baby pkgs. there are endless charities that benefit from something that's fun, easy, relaxing and makes you feel thankful for all the blessings in life you never really appreciated and it's great to feel so alive again.
