Knitting and Crocheting Saves a Life-Mine

In 1970 I gave birth to a son with a birth defect that caused him to spend pretty much the first year of his life in and out of hospitals. The one trip that was most memorable for me was when he had to be flown to a special hospital in Houston, TX. I had never been in an airplane and had never been to Texas so those were both unique experiences. While in Texas, I stayed in my son's room 24/7 for a solid month. After about two days I was going absolutely nuts with boredom. Across the street from the hospital was a chain store so one day at nap time I strolled over there to look around. I had never picked up a crochet hook or pair of knitting needles in my life. As I walked down the craft isle I saw two books that said Learn to Crochet and Learn to Knit. So, I thought to myself, this is something I can teach myself. So I bought both books and some hooks and needles and yarn and went back to the hospital. By the time I left the hospital I had knitted two shawls and crocheted a skirt and vest and several doilies. I've never stopped since then. Now I make holiday gifts for all the family each year that involve either knitting or crocheting. Learning to knit and crochet helped me to get through one of the worse times in my entire life and I am thankful every day for the art. I've managed to teach my daughter, who is left handed, to knit and crochet and she is now teaching her sons and daughters. If I'm not mistaken, the learn to books I purchased over 30 years ago were printed by Lion Brand. Thank you very much for many years of enjoyment.
