Helping to pass the time
Created By: Phyllis Tuttle
I had opened a Beauty Salon some time ago. It takes a long time to develope a following and having people call to have there hair done. While I was waiting and hoping that people would want to ring my phone off the hook, I decided to make my time be productive. I taught myself how to crochet and I would make baby sweaters, booties and hats to match and blankets. In that first year, it didn't seem so long, because of my being busy. As the people started to notice what I was doing, they wanted to purchase these fun little creations. So it turned out to be a win - win situation for me. As time went on, I did become much to busy to work on my crocheting projects. In fact, several of the gals that would come in to get there hair done, would ask me to teach them how to crochet, while they were under the dryers, when I had time. What a lot of fun we had and I made many lifetime friends. After many years of being a cosmetologist, I finally decided to close the salon. But I still have my pictures, my friends and wonderful memories of that time in my life. As a good kicker, I have run into some of the babies that had worn those tiny crocheted things, but they have been handed down to there children. Golly! Reading back over this is making me feel really, really old. But one thing I never gave up on, was my love for crocheting. The many afgans, hooded sweaters, baby sweaters and accessories and shawls, have made for a happy ending and beginning, since I have always kept busy at crocheting and intend to keep it up until the day I pass on. I wander if I could have some yarn and a crochet hook placed in my casket, so where ever I am, I can bide my time until I get to my final resting spot.
