I made this Summer Banner for my church, Walteria...
Created By: Robin Schindler

I made this Summer Banner for my church, Walteria United Methodist, in Torrance, CA. The pattern is from an older pamphlet by House of White Birches, called Inspirational Crochet, that I bought on eBay. The original floral cross pattern called for sport weight yarn, and its longest dimension was 20 inches. I adapted it for banner use by using two strands of worsted weight yarn and an "N" hook for the basic cross.

My plan was to crochet everything entirely out of "stash" yarn, which I did for the cross and its border. For the pink flowers, in my stash I had some of your wonderful Chunky USA, and used one strand of it, with one of the new lucite "L" hooks, and it came out PERFECT. So I went to my local Jo-Ann's and bought a skein each of yellow, blue and green to do the other flowers and the leaves. They came out just as perfect! Once completed, I basted the cross to a sparkle organza backing (which I stitched to proper dimensions), then glued the flowers in place. The banner is about 28 inches wide and 45 inches long.

The banner debuted on Sunday, July 20, 2003, in honor of our pastor, Kathleen Ross, on her 50th birthday.

The first picture is of the banner itself; the second is of our Worship Chair, Betty Mitchell, and Pastor Kathleen.

Thanks for the opportunity to share my handiwork. I use SO MUCH Lion Brand Yarn in my projects (you should see my three prayer shawls - one of which I wore when I was Lay Liturgist in June - out of Homespun). But this banner is one of my favorite projects, and I hope to enter it at the LA County Fair in September, as a matter of fact!
