comfort scarves for abused women
Created By: Leslye Borden
Craft: crochet
Materials: We use every yarn. All of our yarn is donated by yarn companies and by individuals. What makes our scarves distinctive is that each one is decorated at both ends with Lion Brand Fun Fur or other novelty yarn. No two scarves are alike. We use other soft yarn for the body of the scarf. Because we use big needles (size 17) or hooks (K or N), we usually combine two yarns. Our scarves don't have to be washable. Here's the pattern: 10 stitches. Knit/crochet 4 inches with main yarn and Fun Fur. Cut Fun Fur and continue with main yarn and secondary yarn. Knit/crochet 52 more inches. Cut secondary yarn. Continue with main yarn and Fun Fur. The stitch doesn't matter. We prefer the scarves to be 4 to 4 1/2 inches wide and around 60 inches long.

Handmade Especially for You knits/crochets comfort scarves and donates them to shelters for abused women. Since we started at the end of 2008, we have distributed 55,000 scarves to 60 shelters in S CA. Many volunteers participate in our project; they come from retirement homes, senior centers, church groups, high schools, and other service groups. Making the scarves is as meaningful for them as is receiving the scarves is for abused women. Our project is a wonderful example of the community helping the community.
