Like many lovers of knitting I have cast on and off, sometimes the cast offs lasted many years. The last cast off was for almost 15 years.

I cant remember why I picked up the old needles and hunted out for my not quite as old stash (I'm a little older than my teeth, springs to mind, or is that just me?)

I was definitely rusty and needed lots of practice. . . . patience and more patience and practice.

I had experienced deep sadness several years previous and here it was knocking on my door again . . . . However, I found myself picking up my knitting and discovered that knitting was a great coping strategy for me. I found it calming and healing.

After a while a very dear friend who practices Shamanic healing asked me if I would knit for her a 'special' throw I have to admit that I was a little apprehensive in the beginning, due to the fact that my friend was buying the yarn..... It was wonderful choosing designs for each block. It was important that the throw reflected nature and my friend's heart and soul. . .

I took inspiration from Nicki Epstein's book Block Knitting and became consumed with finding more designs to make up what I felt was a spiritual quest.

I never lost enthusiasm for this project, even when I was knitting the stocking stitch blocks, of which there are 17 and 18 patterned blocks.

I learnt so much about myself as I knitted along this beautiful creation. I was amazed at how many new techniques I learnt, how my skill improved, how I love to try complicated patterns, the more challenging the better which enabled me to maintain my interest, my powers of concentration were excellent, I was so patient, (no matter how many times I had to unravel, re-study the pattern and try again) Not a single tantrum, amazing! I rose to the challenge of making the biggest project I had ever attempted before and loved every stitch.
