September 11, 2011 - National Day of Service and Remembrance
By: Michelle Edwards

Pumpkin Hats

This Sunday, I will knit a preemie hat. Unlike the little white hat I knit after I heard the first news reports on the morning of September 11, 2001, this hat will brave a color. Orange. A pumpkin hat for the Preemie Project's fall drive. A pair of matching booties will be made as well. A few days ago, I purchased the yarn. I'm ready.

To honor the fifth anniversary of 9/11, I wrote an essay for this newsletter, Gesture for the Future. Now on the tenth anniversary, we share it with you again. My story is a humble offering, for all of us have our own stories. And when we remember back to the uncertainty and tragedy of that dark time, we also remember the bright bravery and true valiant efforts of so many volunteers. We remember what Michelle Obama has called "the spirit of unity and compassion."

September 11 has been officially declared a National Day of Service and Remembrance. With your needles, hooks, and looms, you can join with me and others all over America and contribute to the greater good. Knit a purple infant hat for the new initiative, Click for Babies. Crochet a healing shawl. Loom a Warm Up America square. Let our hands and hearts unite in tribute.
