We are not in the process of crocheting candles to have for this next year Christmas season to present to as many nursing home patients as possible. This will help make each room fiesty and since they could never have a real candle burning, it will brighten up their rooms with these handmade crocheted candles. I also would like to hand make a baby afghan to give each mother as she leaves the hospital with her new baby. Many mothers do not have the proper wrap for a baby when leaving the hospital, especially in the cold months... Starting the month of March, We will be making blankets or afghans for this purpose.

About us: I coordinate a group of knitters and crocheters- ladies & men who make caps, mittens, scarfs, baby sets and lap robes for children and seniors here in Curry County. All our yarn is donated or purchased at garage sales and I deliver to who ever needs their supply replenished. In early December, all itms are taken to the local Senior Centers where I collect them and turn them over to Children's services who sees that they get to kids in schools, head start and in food baskets. Senior items are delivered to Home, Health & Hospice for them to use. On several occasions, we have had a surplus number of caps so they were sent to Dornbecker Children's Hospital in Portland for cancer patients.

There are no rules, or monies charged. I find patterns on the internet-thanks Lion Brand! I have an extensive collection of old patterns, but they are always looking for new ones especially for the new yarns.

This started out as project through a yarn shop, the lady died, her partner in the project moved and by default I have taken on the task because I believe in the need.

About us: Hi, I'm a full-time Faith Community volunteer with the youth of Covenant House New York, a crisis center for homeless youth. In particular, I work with 18-21 year old homeless moms and their babies. Over the past few months, I've begun sharing with the young mothers my love of crocheting, and they've truly beeing delighting in this newfound skill. Often, they're so excited they bring their crocheting projects with them to dinner and social activities. One mother who'd just begun her first scarf told me, "I'm so happy, I can't stop smiling."

We make / need: Unforunately, our agency is already facing financial hardships and simply can't afford even the most basic crocheting supplies. I can't tell you how happy it would make these over-burdened, stressed out kids if you could share with us some yarn and possibly crochet hooks. We're not too picky about colors or kind-- just some good beginner stuff to get them going. One small but significant step toward rebuilding their self-confidence.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Charity

About us: I currently crochet alone to create prayer shawls, hats and scarves for people in need. Presently I donate the items through a local church, who in turn, pass them on to hospice and local shelters. I am looking for others to join me in my mission to see that everyone in need has a shawl, a hat, scarf or whatever we can create for them. When I have small segments of yarn left over, I put little layette sets together for babies in need.
I welcome new members, and of course, volunteers to put together as many articles as we can. If you are in another city, or state, let's get the word out to your neighbors to help you! You can then donate to your local chapters of hospice, hospital wards, and homeless shelters. The need is great, and I know your heart is too.
Thanks for your help!
www.crochet4charity.ning.com
Please add pictures of what you make, too.

We make / need: The items I make, and have had many requests for are:
prayer shawls, ski caps (hats) skull caps, scarves and gloves. I also make fingerless gloves to go along with the prayer shawls, when I have enough yarn leftover. The skull caps are great for women who are undergoing chemotherapy.
Baby blankets and little hats are always needed as well.
I currently donate all of the items I make to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Dallas, Pa. They, in turn, pass them on to Hospice, and a local homeless shelter. Other items I make, they sell at their rummage sales, and then put the proceeds to good charitable use.
I welcome donations, and would love to hear of ways others do similar projects. Whether you work alone, or in groups, what you do for others is a reward, all in itself!!!
If some of you who read this, are near my neighborhood, please let me know. Maybe we can get together on a regular basis, and share more items with those in need.
Thanks you!

Contact: Arlene Comora, Arlene Comora acomora@fortistar.com

About us: Cubs for Kids is an organization started out of a love of children and a love of knitting. The purpose of the
organization is to allow knitters to use their craft and left over yarn to create something that a child less fortunate would treasure forever.

Over the past six years Cubs For Kids has developed into thriving organization and has provided more than 4000
bear cubs to homeless children across the country. Our organization is dependent on the large data base of knitters that generously provide us with the clothing for these bear cubs, the donations that provide us with the funds needed for the purchase of these bear cubs and the shipping to the shelters which takes place in early December. Wonderful volunteers donate their talents to dressing the bears and provide all of the other services needed to run Cubs For Kids. FORTISTAR and their staff at no cost provide all of our office needs which help run Cubs For Kids.

Due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast, Cubs for Kids will be shipping bears earlier than planned to shelters in the region. Therefore we are asking for more donations than ever so we can ensure that the shelters in the Gulf Coast region as well as the shelters that receive our bears every year during the holiday season are able to distribute as many bears as possible.

We make / need: Cubs for Kids provides the bear cub and a pattern for the sweater, hat and scarf. Knitters provide their creativity
and extra yarn. Completed outfits are then collected and in early December, the cubs are dressed, gift-wrapped and
delivered to the homeless shelters. Over the past five years more than 35 shelters across the country have received these bear cubs dressed in hand knit clothing. See our web site www.cubsforkids.com

Grants or donations to the school would be of great assistance. The children are discussing the act of giving while they themselves become more focused, patient and , tolerate as they crochet. They tell me that at home crochetting fills the spaces of time that they would be otherwise feeling bored. I see unlimited possiblities for growth and a sense of pride and well being through this club. As they become more skilled they are bringing it into their homes and teaching other family members.
My hope is that through crochetting wonderful things will happen.

We make / need: We would love donations that would keep us crochetting. Yarn and crochett hooks or monatary donations are the only items needed at this point.

I want to thank everyone in advance for supporting our kids.

We make / need: You can knit or crochet scarves for boys, girls, men, women, and children. They should be at least 5 inches wide and long enough to go around your neck. I would also like to suggest dark colors for the boys and men. Also if you don't know how to knit or crochet you can send donations of yarn and I will knit them. Every little bit helps!

Also if you would like to send a picture of you knitting the scarf you can send it by email or regular mail-I am making a scrapbook to show people.

Eventually, I would like to make what I call "Fuzzy Bundles" which would have socks, a hat, gloves or mittens, wrapped up in the scarf.

About us: We knit and crochet "comfort" scarves for abused women. We distribute individually wrapped scarves to local shelters. We have distribed about 100 scarves so far to two shelters. One serves 300 women; the other 1500 women. THE NEED IS GREAT! We need scarves which the women use like security blankets so they need to be made of soft yarn. We also need people who can teach yarn arts to children and teens so they can make scarves. THE NEED IS ONGOING! We work in the Torrance/San Pedro/Long Beach area of S. CA but there are women's shelters everywhere in the US.

We make / need: We need finished scarves.
We need yarn.
We need tissue paper, ribbon, etc. because we wrap each scarf individually when we deliver them. Most of our recipients have never before received a personal gift, much less a handmade personal gift.
We need $$$$$

About us: We knit and crochet scarves for abused women. We need participants because there are so many abused women. In our community alone (Los Angeles South Bay), Rainbow House serves over 300 women; Richstone Family Center serves 1500! Agencies in Redondo Beach and Long Beach need scarves. 1736 House, a large agency in Los Angeles, is too big for me even to consider supplying with scarves at this point.

We call our scarves "comfort scarves" because the women use them for comfort as well as for warmth (it really doesn't get too cold in S. CA). I feel every community has need of an organization like mine. If you want to start a chapter in your area, I will be glad to help you in any way I can.

My website will be ready soon. I'll keep you posted.

Since September, we have distributed almost 200 scarves.

We accept anyone who wants to participate. Please send your completed scarf to the address above. We suggest making a narrow, long scarf using soft yarn and big needles. I like to combine yarns so I can use the big needle. I also make scarves using up my scraps.

When the scarves are finished, we have a "wrap" session. A group of volunteers wraps each one individually in brightly colored tissue paper, ties it with a ribbon. If the maker of the scarf hasn't tied on a card, one of the volunteers does, including a good wish for the future.

Recipients of the scarves usually have never before received a personal gift, much less a handmade personal gift. The women are thrilled and amazed to receive the scarves. They can't believe someone would do this for them. The response has been very gratifying to me and others participating with me.

To participate, all you need to do is knit or crochet a scarf and send it to me. Or start your own group and find a shelter in your community. Everyone is welcome.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Leslye

We make / need: We make scarves about 5 inches wide and 60-70 inches long. We use soft yarn and big needles or hooks.

We are very happy to receive donations. So far we have received yarn only, but we also need needles, hooks, tissue paper, ribbon.

About us: Harbor House was founded in 1992 by the parents of eleven men and women with mental retardation, developmental disabilities and brain injuries. The purpose was to create a safe and supportive environment in which their sons and daughters could gain the benefits of a regular job. In the beginning each parent volunteered to staff the workshop working one to two days a week. As the number of participants increased, paid supervisors were hired. For the first two years Harbor House operated in space donated by Incarnation Church before moving to the commercial space on St. Andrews Church Road. We are now in a brand new facility located at 2231 Lower Hunters Trc., Louisville, KY 40216

Harbor House is ensuring that handicapped adults will have the programs and services to meet the individual’s abilities, in our local community. We know that if we keep doing the right thing, for the right group of people, for the right reason, good things will happen. Every day brings great things at Harbor House. Come and see!

We make / need: Particpants and volunteers crochet articles such as neck scarfs and handbags to sell at our fundraising events.

For these items yarns such as sport-weight, fun furs, eyelash, and other novelty yarns that are donated would be greatly appreciated.

We are a charitable organization providing Help, Understanding, Guidance and Support to the homeless, disabled and poor living predominately in the Cass Corridor and surrounding areas. We foster social and environmental stewardship through the provision of basic household and personal needs both recycled and new to ensure the dignity of each individual.

One Action Has Power
How You Can Help

Often times someone does not know what to do with items after they redecorate, downsize, move a family member to assisted living, or have to dispose of an estate. These are exactly the donations we are looking for. As more housing becomes available for the poor in our community, we recycle, whenever possible, the items that are no longer used in one home but are needed to make another functional and livable.

We are looking for volunteers to either send us the completed items or scrap yarn.

We make / need: For our friends living with no shelter our knitting/crocheting friends make scarfs, hats, mittens, blankets, washcloths from donated yarns. Blankets and washcloths are needed year round.

The cold weather is coming and we assist over 250 people each month with the little things a washcloth, bar of soap, toothpaste and tooth brush. Easy to clean up in a public restroom, fits nicely in a back pack, restores human dignity and a smile.

About us: Our Organizagion is the Isle of Iowa Parrotheads of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. We help many different charity groups through out the year. This year our city has been greatly affected by the huge flood and many of our residents still do not have housing and the kids are displaced. So, we decided to give the a "Thrillville on the Hill" Halloween Party and invite grades K-6th to make a difference in their lives. Many do not have costumes or toys this year and we just wanted to provide a good party for them for a day.

Where the crocheting comes in is I, Cindy Ballew am on the entertainment committee and volunteered to make 100 bookworms for the fishpond, and teach the 5th and 6th graders to learn how to crochet. Well, guess what the other day I get a memo saying instead of 100 kids, they are having all of the kids coming from the whole city to one high school gym and that could mean 1,000 bookworms to crochet. And I need to get ready the yarn and hooks for the 5th and 6th graders to teach. The party is Oct. 18th and I need some help from some fellow crocheters. The bookworms are the basic ones that curl. And I will even finish them off, but I need some crocheting help. So I am pleading with any fellow crocheters. If any of you have any spare time in the next few weeks. Use any spare yarn you have in any color imaginable to make some bookworms. You can use the bookworm pattern free under this site, I am sure the boys will enjoy that one. (the aligator) or go to prwriteclb@aol.com and I will give you the easy pattern that I am doing. I and the Isle of Iowa Parrotheads and the kids of Cedar Rapids thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

We make / need: I make for charity auctions for the many charity events we have, crocheted purses, scarves, potholders, etc. and now 1,000 bookworms. It would be great to have Lion Brand donate some of their "Learning to Crochet kits", but if not I will make up balls of yarn for the many 5th & 6th graders that will come to the party listed above who I plan to teach to crochet the bookworms or a belt or scarf. I also need any crochet hooks size f through i to give to the people I am teaching. I do not have a total count yet on how many that will be, but I myself cannot afford to buy all the hooks. We tryed to think of something to entertain all of the ages for the day and I want to keep the crocheting going to the next generation. This is going to be our "Make a Difference" day. Our club makes many donations to the Boys and Girls Club of Cedar Rapids, Waypoint, which helps women and children who are down on their luck or abused and helps them. There are many other charities I myself give to, but I try to keep them to what hits my heart. I am a 9 year surviver of breast cancer and there are a lot of people who have benefits who do not have insurance to cover their dr bills and I tend to crochet scarfs, ect. to help them get more money to make their lives a little easier.

About us: Jewish Volunteer Connection brings together people who want meaningful, hands-on volunteer experiences.

Jewish Volunteer Connection is planning their largest annual volunteer event, Community Mitzvah Day, that takes place on Christmas Day. Over 500 volunteers participate in meaningful service projects in soup kitchens, shelters, nursing homes, etc. in and around the Baltimore area. In addition to working hands-on with various agencies in the community, volunteers assemble and deliver over 1000 winter care packages for those that are homeless. These care packages contain scarves, hats, gloves, food, etc..

There are a number of agencies, knitting clubs, and groups of volunteers offering to make handmade scarves to be distributed in these packages so that the recipients are warm this winter.

Companies like Lion Brand Yarn have graciously contributed to this effort by providing donated and discounted materials to see that over 1000 people who are homeless receive a handmade and heartwarming scarf this winter.

We make / need: We encourage volunteers who wish to make scarves for this effort to contact us and we continue to accept donations of yarn and other materials.

We appreciate everyone's effort so far and are extremely thankful for Lion Brand Yarn.

We are always looking for new members to support the work we do in the community. While our main focus is community service to our youth, we continually address and support the needs of the elderly, homeless, physically and mentally challenged. We place special emphasis on working to support the many challenges of cancer programs and address health issues.

Special qualifications for being a member of our organization is the willingness to serve!

We accept donations and greatly appreciate assistance from everyone.

At this time we are hoping that your company can please help us. We have recently been given about 10 Knit for a Cause kits. (What a fantastic item!) We got together and taught members of our clubs how to knit. We made a scarf and donated to an individual who has been diagnosed with cancer. The American Cancer Society truly enjoyed this project and gave us names of cancer patients. We were hoping you could provide us with kits to make and donate more scarves. If the kits were not available, the gift of the yarn in the kits would be greatly appreciated.

We strive to give service to our community. We depend on the generousity of organizations such as yours to help us continue our efforts.

About us: We are a middle school knitting club that just formed last year. We started by knitting scarves for a homeless shelter in neighboring town. We invited any girls, teachers, staff and parents who wanted to learn how to knit, or who already knew how to knit but wanted to knit in a group. We provided free yarn for anyone as long as the yarn was used to knit a scarf for the charity.

In our second year, I plan to offer a variety of charities for our knitters: scarves, simple teddy bears for children in shelters, and squares or blankets for Warm Up America. I am hoping to find more projects and charities to keep up the interest of our knitters as their skills become more advanced.

We make / need: We will gladly accept donations of yarn, needles, etc. Needles disappear on a regular basis!

About us: The McGuffey 21CCLC program is a grant-funded afterschool program that is a partnership between the Columbus Public School disctrict and Communities In Schools, a 501C3 organization that focuses on reducing barriers to success for Columbus Public students and their families. We are located in the Linden community, an inner-city neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio.

Our afterschool program runs 5 days a week throughout the school year and for several weeks during the summer. We provide academic enrichment, physical fitness, and family literacy activities, as well as family involvement and social services. We serve about 40 students in grades 1-5, plus their families.

We recently started a Stitch Club for the students in our program. The basic mission of our club is to teach a lifelong skill to the kids who participate, while encouraging them to give back to the community in a meaningful way. A wonderful side-effect of this club is that we're working on math and literacy skills and hand-eye coordination in a fun, relaxing way.

This club is led by Regan Manczak, site coordinator for the 21CCLC program and craftster-in-training. We meet for one to two hours each week and are currently learning the fundamentals of crochet. We hope to move on to a few basic patterns and eventually create a group project that can be donated to a local charity (the kids will help decide which charity they would like to donate to).

We have eight students who attend the club regularly and two teen volunteers who assist. We are always looking for additional members and volunteers. Teen volunteers must submit a Volunteer application and adult volunteers must complete a criminal background screening before they are permitted to work with our kids.

We make / need: Currently, we're working on the basics of chain stitches and also basic hand sewing (since we'll need that as we finish projects). Our first pattern will be a single-crochet scarf. We will also begin work on squares for a blanket. We hope to move on to basic knitting by the springtime.

We welcome donations of all kinds. We are especially interested in donations of knitting needles and crochet hooks in medium and large sizes. It would be best if we could gather multiple needles and hooks of the same size, so all the participants can work on one pattern or project together.
We can also use yarn of all sorts, especially worsted weight and heavier yarns in basic colors that can be easily mixed and matched.

About us: We are a group of 25 4-H members who would like to provide scarfs and mittens to as many needy families as possible. We do not really do fundraisers and members pay for any crafts or projects or fun activies out of their own pockets. What we were wondering is if anyone would provide loads and loads of fun fur yarn that we could work on during this next year and then give them to various charities that provide coats and winter wear for needy families...not only for the kids but for the grown ups too!
We are always open to new members and volunteer leaders are great. If you don't know how to knit or crochet we have three leaders who are experts in this area. Please if you could provide us with the yarn and we will provide the work. We will also keep any donor informed of the projects we made with their donations so that they can see we are truly trying to do our part in support of the needy. We also try to do one big group charity project each year and they would love to do this one in 2008. Please help us out if you can. Thank you so much for your consideration!

We make / need: We want to mainly work on scarfs and mittens but our more experienced members want to also make sweaters and knit and crochet blankets and afghans. Our kids are great and dream big so please help us out with any yarn as we will put it all to good use.

About us: This ministry makes pink scarves for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. The pink scarf is symbolic of the pink ribbon which represents breast cancer. During the creation, the knitter prays that the recipient will be healed of disease, her doctors and care givers will have the wisdom to properly treat her, and that she and her family are filled with peace.

Regardless of whether or not the recipient chooses to wear the scarf, it’s a tangible object that she can hold in her hand, knowing that the person who crafted it prayed healing prayers during its creation.

The scarves can be knit, crocheted, or sewn, as long as the recipient is prayed for during the creation. The scarves are open to creative interpretation.

For those that would like to participate in other areas, we will need donations of pink yarns, card stock for printing the labels, and pink tissue and ribbon to wrap the scarves.

We are in our infancy and definitely want volunteers!!! The only qualification for being a member is the desire to help these women.

We'll be happy to teach you basic knitting or crochet in the San Antonio, Texas area.

Thank you for your interest!

We make / need: We make pink scarves.

We accept donations of pink yarn, knitting needles and crochet hooks, pink tissue paper, pink ribbon (both paper and fabric), printable card stock.

About us: RSVP (Retired & Senior Volunteer Program) of Washington County matches seniors 55 years and older with volunteer opportunities. We are funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the Ohio Department on Aging and the Washington County Senior Levy.

We currently have 400 volunteers who donated over 56,000 hours of community service last year. The average age of our volunteer is 75.

Those hours were served in local hospitals, nursing homes, museums, schools and many other non-profit organizations.

We make / need: We have been asked to coordinate the "Coats for Kids" campaign in our community. In conjuntion with our local newspaper, collection drums have been set up around the county to collect outgrown coats. Our volunteers launder and mend the donated items before distributing them to families in need.

Our group thought that it would be nice to include a new hat, scarf and/or mittens with each coat, so we are asking for help with this project. We printed off several patterns from the Lion Brand Yarn website and have distributed them to our knitters and crocheters. Quite a few hats have been turned in! We leave the hats out on our desks and when visitors ask about them, we hand them a pattern!

We accept any size, style and color of hats, mittens and scarves. They will be distributed to families with children of all ages... birth through high school.

About us: RSVP is a non-profit volunteer group for seniors, 55 years of age and older. We recruit 55+ volunteers to fill the volunteer needs of our non-profit agency partners, and those needs of special events and our own programs such as "Knittin' Kittens". Our "Knittin' Kittens" group began in Sept. 2005 and it was a way to teach volunteers to knit and/or crochet. We started with about 8 vounteers and we now have a solid group of 30+, with many volunteers that knit at home and attend only on occasion.
We still teach new members (no fee to join RSVP), but our primary goal is to knit scarves for elementary students so we adopt an elementary school each December and take each child a new scarf and hat. We have completed this project at the following Tulsa Schools, Greeley, Anderson, Marshall & McClure. We choose a school in our city that has a lot of need.

We also knit "healing shawls" for the local Domestic Violence Intervention Services office, so they can give as many survivors as possible currently in counseling a shawl. We also knit flowers for the survivors. Since we need about 2000 a year, it is our goal to give each survivor something so she knows she has support!

Our "knittin' Kittens" meet each week for 1 hour at 12:30pm at the RSVP office and we bring in all the things we have made since our last visit. We visit, have coffee and sometimes cookies, share patterns, etc....

Thank you for any help you can give us or for connecting us to local people that may want to help us or become involved.

We make / need: We make scarves for elementary age kids and shawls for adults. We accept donated items, yarn, knitting needles and crochet hooks.

Sheila's Shawls and Paul's Scarfs
http://www.silentwitness.net/sub/Sheila_shawl.htm
547 N Joyce
Lombard IL 60148 US

Contact: Danielle Byron daniellek2tog@yahoo.com

About us: Silent Witness honors the lives of Sheila and Paul Wellstone and the great work they did in domestic violence awareness and prevention (before they and one of their daughters were killed in a plane crash in 2002). We do this very simply -- and we invite you to join us -- by creating and gifting healing shawls and scarves to family and friends of those who lose their lives in domestic violence, and for those who survive.

We welcome shawls and scarves created with healing thoughts and kind intentions, whether they be knitted, crocheted, hand-sewn or woven. The idea and intent is to let healing energies and good will flow from your heart through your hands into what you create, so those who receive one of Sheila's Shawls or Paul's Scarves will feel the comfort of kindness and concern.

The real purpose for us in creating healing shawls or scarves is to weave energies of hope and love into every stitch. Being mindful and reflective while we work on a scarf or a shawl allows us time to add in positive thoughts, prayers, or affirmations. Some of us choose to chant, hum, sing -- or simply sit quietly -- while we weave, sew, knit or crochet.

Whatever your tradition or heart suggests, let this be a peaceful experience and process for you, as it will be for those who receive the shawl or scarf that you have created. These two projects are winging their ways out into the world, separately and together, embracing and enriching the hearts of many in so many touching and unexpected ways.

We warmly welcome you to join with us in this wonderful work, as we each volunteer however much time, energy and heartfelt effort we can as best we can, while we create, collect, connect with others, and share Sheila's Shawls and Paul's Scarves with those who can benefit from them.

May all domestic violence end -- and may there be domestic peace.

About us: We started our organization in 2002 with a small group of junior high school girls and their moms, teaching them all how to knit scarves, and then we donated them to various homeless shelters in the area. We would have SWAP meets on the first Friday of every month. We call ourselves SWAPpers. The group grew to around 50 members. After three years of knitting, we donated over 500 scarves! The junior high school girls became high school girls, busy with their lives, so we took a two-year hiatus. But we miss our monthly meetings and are all ready and very excited to start up again. Our first official SWAP meet will join together again on the last Friday night of November 2007. We have a website that explains what we're all about, scarveswithapurpose.com. We've even been in the local newspaper a couple of times! We'd like to become more broad-based and are looking for ways to attract more SWAPpers. Through our website, we have received scarves from knitters across the country, which just thrilled us! It would be great if people in other states would form a chaper. We hope this is a good starting place. Please let us know!

We make / need: Warm scarves of any color and that would wrap around a neck at least once. We attach a nice card to each scarf with the person's first name that knitted it.

About us: Hello, we are a group of 8 ladies that get together every Thrusday at my house. We have a young mother in her twentys to several grandmothers. Between the group we have different levels of expertise. Some started out learning to knit and the others are experinced kniters.

Currently we have been knitting for the Providence House in Cleveland Ohio - it is a wonderful home for people who desperately need help with their children, infants to a young age. So far we are knitting hats and scarfs for the children.

We make / need: Currently hats and scarfs but we are thinking of making small blankets so when the babies go home they would have something very soft. Cleveland Ohio winters can be very cold because of the location on Lake Erie. We found a very simple stocking hat on the internet that is easy for eveyone. The pictures of the hats on your email look so great...happy and cheerful ....something that a child would be attracted to !

Donations of yarn even small amount would be appreciated. One of the members is making prayer shawls and shops the sales to make it affordable.

Since its formation on November 29, 2007The Little Knitters has grown to 10-12 girls. (According to several boys, I need to add a group for them!)

We make / need: I am teaching students how to knit scarfes, (belts in the spring) while working on interpersonal skills. With the rapid speed of the growing number of students that want to join, I need help with purchasing yarn and needles for students. Each student receives their own knitting needles and yarn with the goal of playing it forward. Teaching someone else to knit.

About us: LOOKING FOR KNITTED/CROCHETED SCARFS AND HATS FOR CHILDREN INFECTED/AFFECTED WITH HIV AIDS FOR WINTER 2007/2008

The Mazzoni Center serves many low-income people and families, infected/affected by HIV/AIDS, and approximately 25% of these households have young children living in them. A very special project which we coordinate each year is an annual holiday toy drive for children affected by HIV/AIDS. Each year we provide holiday gifts for over 300 children in the Philadelphia area who are either living with HIV/AIDS, or whose parents are living with HIV/AIDS and are unable to purchase gifts for their children during the holidays.

This year, we are asking the fabulous community of knitters to help up provide these children with Scarfs and hats. Many of these kids go without proper winter clothing and your hand made goods would be incredibly appreciated and loved!

We make / need: Scarfs, hats, socks, gloves, mittens, blankets.

Threads of Compassion

Chicago IL 60640 US

Contact: Sarah Sullivan threads_of_compassion@yahoo.com

About us: Threads of Compassion is a loosely connected group of survivors of sexual violence who desire to offer comfort and support to recent victims. The idea is simple. Any survivor of sexual assault or abuse is welcome to knit or crochet a scarf which in turn will be given to an assault or abuse victim when they enter the hospital for emergency treatment.

Having been through similar experiences ourselves, our hope is to offer support at a time when a person is feeling most forsaken, fearful, and vulnerable and in a simple way let them know they are not alone. The scarves are tangible objects that can be held, wrapped around the neck or shoulders, with the deeper meaning known only by the wearer.

The scarves represent a couple of things. One, that the victim is not alone. The second is hope. The knowledge that other people have been able to move forward after facing similar situations, can in turn give the victims hope that they also will find the strength to move on.

The added beauty of the scarves is that the gift is actually two-fold. Through making the scarves, survivors are provided an opportunity to help other victims (in a very non-threatening way). Everyone remains anonymous. Those who knit the scarves never meet the specific person who receives their scarf. That is all handled through the local rape crisis center. Most hospitals now contact victim advocates when sexual violence victims come into the ER, and it is through this staff that the scarves will be presented to the victims. Each scarf will have a small card attached to it that explains the idea behind Threads of Compassion and information on how to contact their local crisis center if they need further help or support.

If you have any questions or comments feel free to email us at: threads_of_compassion@yahoo.com

We make / need: If anyone would like to contribute a scarf, please do. We would be honored to receive them. The only requirement is that you, yourself, be a survivor. The scarves do not have to be any specific length, color, or masterpiece. We do ask that you try to make the scarves out of very soft yarn that can be held close without feeling scratchy to the skin. There are numerous scarf patterns that are very easy to knit or crochet, and can be made by any beginner.

After you have made your scarf feel free to mail it to us. Send it to Threads of Compassion / 920 W. Wilson Ave. / Chicago, IL 60640.

Contact: S. Sullivan nellplucy@yahoo.com

About us: Threads of Compassion is a loosely connected group of survivors of sexual violence who desire to offer comfort and support to recent victims. The idea is simple. Anyone whose life has been affected by sexual assault or abuse is welcome to knit or crochet a scarf which in turn will be given to a victim of sexual violence when they enter the hospital for emergency treatment.

Having been through similar experiences ourselves, our hope is to offer support at a time when a person is feeling most forsaken, fearful, and vulnerable and in a simple way let them know they are not alone. So many people are lost in how to respond to friends and family that have been victims of sexual abuse or assault...so they opt to say and do nothing. Their fear of adding more pain by saying or doing the wrong thing results in silence. This silence is heartbreaking to the victim...a silence that offers no validation to the pain they are feeling. The silence produces shame.

One of the main thoughts behind Threads of Compassion is to acknowledge this pain. The gift of these scarves not only says someone was thinking of victim, but also expresses the knitters/crocheters sorrow for what has happened. Each scarf is made by someone who wishes to provide a small amount of comfort against the pain being faced, and by doing so lets the victim know they are not alone. The scarves are tangible objects that can be held, wrapped around the neck or shoulders, with the deeper meaning known only by the wearer. As each victim then touches the threads of the scarves they receive, they are connecting with someone who not only cares about what has happened to them but who also wants to show their concern. A huge message given through a few threads of yarn.

We make / need: If you would like to contribute a scarf, please do. We would be honored to receive them. Anyone whose life has been affected by sexual assault or abuse is welcome to make and send a scarf. Whether scarves are done by survivors, or friends and family members of survivors, it does not matter, (scarves can also be made in honor of friends who were raped, family members who suffered sexual abuse, etc.).

The scarves do not have to be any specific length, color, or masterpiece. We do ask that you try to make the scarves out of very soft yarn that can be held close without feeling rough to the skin. There are numerous scarf patterns available that are very easy to knit or crochet, and can be made by any beginner.

Contact: Judy Gentry, Founder and President jt.silver@verizon.net

About us: Warmer Winters was founded in 2006 to warm the winters of neighbors in need. One cold Winter day, as I waited for a bus, I had the time to truly see the many men and women, bare headed, bare handed, their faces hidden in the collars of their thin jackets. They had no scarves or anything to help them fight the cold. These were the invisible people, the homeless people. They warm themselves where they can until the shelters open. I knew that day I had to do something. I began a small knitting group.

Today that group numbers 65. Our 65 volunteers range in age from 9 to 90 and include men, women, boys and girls. Our volunteers include homebound elderly, shut ins, and whole families.

We give to shelters and agencies in North Central Mass. to help homeless adults and families as well as people who have homes but cannot afford to heat them. Many poor people slip between the cracks when it comes to assistance. They are the people who must choose between food and heat. Warmer Winters tries to stave off hypothermia for these people with warm sweaters and afghans. With the prohibitive cost of fuel, the need is greater than ever.

Last Winter Warmer Winters distributed more than 1300 items to 20 agencies in 4 towns.

In addition to giving to people in need, we also teach low income youngsters and adults to knit for their families and hope in time to provide a place where our "students" can sell some of what they make.

We meet once a month for Knit Nite and are always looking for more volunteers and more people who wish to send us any hand knit or crocheted items appropriate for Winter.

We would also be delighted to hear from organizations like ours in other parts of the country to exchange ideas.

Although Warmer Winters is not a 501c3, our Fiscal Agent is and we are able to seek grants and take tax deductible donations under their 501c3 designation.

Warmer Winters volunteers make hats, scarves, mittens, sweaters, slippers for all sizes as well as afghans and even knitted toys.

We've given to homeless shelters, battered women's shelters, community centers, family services and many other agencies. Our hope this year is to distribute 2000 items!
If you can knit even a scarf, you can volunteer for Warmer Winters. The poverty rate in Central Mass. is high and this is our way to respond to it.

We make / need: The items we make and that we accept are hats, scarves, sox, slippers, sweaters in all sizes.

The donations we seek are knitting needles (size 10 and larger) and on our wish list is Knifty Knitters. Our primary need is warmth so whatever you make does not need to be fancy or complicated. We try to use bulky yarn as often as possible for warmth.

We have an e-mail newsletter so if anyone would like to know more about Warmer Winters, we'd be happy to send it to you.

(One Saturday when bags were delivered a new mother had been crying because she had no idea what she would take her baby home in). Our group provided a good starter kit along with a blanket made with love and in some cases some beautiful sweaters, hats, bibs and booties all hand made.

This ministry has just SNOW BALLED. Buying Lion Brand Yarn also helps ST. JUDE CHILDRENS HOSPITAL.

About us: Our youth group decided to reach out to the homeless and needy in and around the "First Coast". We spend 1 Saturday a month visiting and praying with those in need. We receive donations of toiletry items and blankets to pass out also. After teaching myself to knit I found others interested in learning also. We meet once a week to share and encourage each other while we make scarves & hats for the street ministry. We share tools to keep the individual expense low. We pool yarn bought on sale & received by donations. So far there is only 5 of us - 3 women & 2 teenagers. But we are all committed to making at least 1 scarf a month (most of us make 3 or more now). We encourage and welcome anyone to meet with us as we try to be the "Hands of Christ" making scarves & hats.

We make / need: Right now we are making scarves & hats. We hope to expand to prayer shawls, afghans, and any other items we find are needed. All items we make are passed out during the winter months by the youth while out visiting with those in need.

About us: Western States Wild Horse and Burro Expo: We put on an annual horse show for Mustangs and Burros. Throughout the year, we also do a garage sales and a craft show around Christmas time - ALL proceeds go to Wild horse rescue. ALL items sold are donated, so ALL the money gets donated to horse rescue. In 2006, we donated proceeds from both our Garage Sale and our participation in a craft fair to WHOA. WHOA takes in Mustang orphans and feeds them around the clock for several months. Once the orphans are well enough, they are adopted to approved homes. WHOA also has several Mustangs and a burro that are living out their retirement days in a loving environment.

We also support the Mustang Gentling program at Warm Springs Correctional facility. When the inmates need tack, jeans or boots, they contact us and we hit thrift stores looking for jeans and boots. All year long we beg for tack that people are no longer using to donate to the prison program.

Check us out at www.wildhorseandburroexpo.com

We make / need: For our annual craft fair - we will take any donated home made items. Some items that we are working on are: Baby blankets, scarfs, dog sweaters, etc...

We are a non profit, 100% volunteer group. All money goes towards the education and rescue of Wild Horses and burros.

About us: One of the main things that I do for this organization is to volunteer my time and skills to teach the girls (or boys) crafts and skills. Many of these children are unschooled when they get to the orphanage and may have delayed maturity in motor skills, learning, and emotionally because of what they have experienced.
Teaching them a new skill encourages them to learn, feel more confident about themselves, and gives them something to call their own. Something they can be proud of. Giving them ownership and responsibility to care for something is also important.
This is a Christian based home. Volunteers come to visit and work from many different agencies, schools, and churches from all over the U.S. Check out the website for more information.

We make / need: We could use crochet kits for small projects like: caps, scarfs, purses, animals, etc.
Knitting needles, crochet hooks, etc.
Some finished projects that would be appreciated are: caps, gloves, sweaters, afghans for the winter. All sizes, different colors. Right now the ages span from 3-15. 6 girls and 1 boy. However; the capacity of this home is for 20-30 children. The children are placed in the home by DIF (MX version of CPS) or by private adoption situations.

About us: Four of us started meeting together a little over 3 years ago to serve the under-resourced with our knitting, crocheting, sewing and quilting. The crocheters and knitters are the largest group. There are two teams - one that meets weekly during the day and the other meets two times a month in the evening. We have a quilters team that meets once a month and a "pull together" sewing team when we need.

Some of our projects have been: knit and crochet toys (including dolls, stuffed animals, and purse/cradles)for young children; baby layettes for a crisis pregnancy center, and hats and mittens for their clients at Christmas; hat, mitten, and scarf sets for 275 men in a homeless shelter; mitten and scarf sets for children at a school in Appalacia; 50+ sweaters; lap blankets for nursing homes; and numerous other items - all for the under-resourced.

This year we are working on: hats and scarves for under-resourced children and young adults, and blankets for AIDS patients in South Africa and Haiti (which is our ongoing project).

The quilters donate their quilts to abused women.
We also teach others to knit and crochet - and our fellowship during our time together is most special. We have a wonderful group of ladies!

We make / need: The kinds of items we make are listed above. We absolutely accept donations - any type of washable yarns, cotton fabric and batting for the quilters. In fact, we would love to have the patterns used in the hat display of the highlighted charity group!

Thanks a bunch - and blessings to you and all you do!

About us: We are a new group of ladies who meet twice each month to knit and crochet together. Our desire is to make items for the encouragement of others.

We make / need: Currently we are making baby blankets for the local crisis prognacy center. We will presaent these to the center in August.

Our next project is to make scarfs, hats and bags for the children of women in prison. These women do not have gifts for their children at Christmas.

A long term project is to help widows in a village in Kenya. We hope to help them to learn to knit and crochet so they can make items for sale at the market as a way to support themselves. Some of them have died of starvation. We plan to have a yard sale to raise money for this group in September. As part of the sale we will have a booth to teach people to knit and crochet.

Since we are a new group we have not had any opportunities to accept donations but we are currently planing to set up a program through a local church.
