Winter Trend: Modern Meets Chunky Stitches

chunky yarnSimple definitely doesn’t have to be boring, and there’s no need for chunky to be frumpy. Chic, modern chunky knits are everywhere this season. Bulky scarves, hats, cowls and shawls are quick to knit up and there are so many ways to wear them. Adding a chunky accessory over a sweater or dress not only keeps you cozy but adds that extra dramatic touch. Tuck a chunky cowl under your favorite peacoat or layer it over the top of a jacket for an extra pop of color. I find that keeping the stitch pattern simple only accentuates the appeal of the bulky yarn, making the stitch definition really stand out. I truly love a sea of super chunky stockinette!

Here is a roundup of my most favorite Lion Brand patterns that call for chunky or super bulky yarn. Any of these projects would be perfect for gift-giving this holiday season. Since they’re quick to make, you’ll most likely have time to make more than one! The best part? Most of these projects are ideal for beginners. Some patterns suggest a different yarn than what I’ve used, but that’s what makes bulky knitting even more fun – experiment and I’m sure you too will find yourself loving the results.

  • I love your yarns and patterns but I don’t like that you have to print out the supply list. It takes up so much paper and ink. Is there a way to get just the pattern?

    • Hi Smontero, here’s a quick trick: Highlight just the portion of the web page you want to print out (in this case, the pattern) and then hit Ctrl P on PCs or Command P on Macs. That should open the “Print” menu. Under “print range” click the radio button for “selection” which will let you just print the highlighted selection of text. Now go ahead and print!

    • I copy and paste into MS Word. I can typically get a picture and the instructions on one page.

    • At the tip right click the download button. This opens just the pattern without the supply list in pdf format. You can then choose to print or save file on your computer to print later.

    • Just copy what you like and paste to word.

  • I just highlight the part of the pattern I want then I go to compose/write a letter then paste it in the letter and send it to myself. Works for me and saves paper and ink. I am on AOL so it is easy for me. I hope this helps.

  • I just hit the download button at the top of the pictures and this opens a new page. It is a PDF and you can either print it out or save it to a file.

    • …Or download it to your Kindle like I do!

  • Do you have a record of your CO number on the Gap-tastic cowl?  I know the original used Wool-Ease Chunky, so I’m sure it would be different with the Thick and Quick.

  • Yes When you go to the print page, it asks for all pages or 1-3 etc. Just select the pages you want.

  • I absolutely love quick and cozy yarn  : )

  • i download to my computer, then print the pattern out, then delete from computer

  • I just copy and past, no waste. save on my pc. 

  • The pattern for the triangle scarf says : SHAWL
     CAST ON  3 STITCHES.
    Row 1 Knit.Row 2 Knit in front and back of first stitch, knit to last stitch, knit in front and back of last stitch. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until 2 yards of yarn remain. Bind off all stitches loosely. Using a larger needle is helpful.

    THREE STITCHES. This CAN’T be right.
    And, in the past, when I have informed the folks at L.B. that there was a mistake in a pattern, i received less than a courteous response, telling me that I WAS WRONG. A few months later, the pattern was corrected! (With no folow up email notice to me.) The pattern was the Homespun Cable Capelet.

    • Three stitches sounds right to me.  You are increasing two stitches every other row.  This scarf/shawl starts at the bottom point and works upward.  You could start with two stitches, but you get a cleaner point with three.
