Tom Hanks Pulls Knitting Prank

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Did you know that movie star and director Tom Hanks loves to play pranks on his sets? His latest film, Larry Crowne, stars avid knitter Julia Roberts. Hanks decided to surprise Roberts by getting the whole crew to take up her favorite hobby!

I’m thrilled to see so many new knitters enjoying the craft, and what a pleasant surprise to see our yarn involved. Great prank, Tom Hanks!

  • too funny, lol

    • I agree very funny…..I hope the person shooting the video wasn’t the professional cameraman for the set….I was getting sea sick from all the {{{{{{ shaking }}}}}}.

  • What a hoot! I love Julia Roberts laugh, so I’d probably do just about anything to hear it, too! So nice that they have such good taste in yarn….go, Lion Brand!

    • Yes, her laugh is contagious!!! This was so cool!

  • This is adorable.  I wonder if any of the guys became devoted to the craft….??
All that yarn looked gorgeous in the shopping cart…wish it were mine!!!

  • hilarious and encouraging! what a great show of unity!

  • This is one of the best pranks I’ve seen!  But I have some questions– Did any of the guys actually take to knitting?  What happened to all the needles and yarn?  How many hours did the woman spend getting everything ready?

    •  Great questions, Linda. I want to know the answers, too!

    • I think they said it took her 12 hours to get enough knitting cast on for each “knitter”!

  • I think I like the teamwork best.  🙂  I wonder how many of these guys will actually take up the art?

  • I volunteer to finish off the stash!

  • I love how the guy at the beginning wasn’t quite sure how to pronounce skeins 😛

  • It would have been really cool if they had just knit enough blocks to make into a patchwork afghan. It could have been auctioned off for charity.

  • I would like to know which yarn the costumer lady was teaching them with — a very pretty beigey pink. Hope all that beautiful yarn was put to good use, maybe donated to a charity?

    • My guess at which yarn Kate was using is Vanna’s Choice® Yarn in color ‘pink’. And the one guy sitting may have been using the color ‘dusty purple’ in the same line. This is such a funny ‘prank’ to play on a truly gay-spirited gal! I love the pure tickled spontaneous reaction from Julia—what a neat person.

  • What happened to all that yarn and those needles?  Did any of the men get interested in knitting ?  :o)

  • Very funny. I love any movie with Julia I saw Larry crown enjoyed it.

  • Very funny, and clever on Tom Hanks part! Never a dull moment on the film sets.

  • Loved the guy with the brown yarn draped over his head like spaghetti!  Great that Tom Hanks thought of a prank that was near and dear to Julia’s heart.

  • Think the world of Julia, love her laugh such a neat person.

  • My favorite comment was “You’re knitting me!”  And, I loved Julia Roberts laughing too.  Too cute!

  • Please send me all the yarn,  I an  making scarves to help a friend with cancer

  • Too too funny, I was laughing out loud!!!!

  • I learned to knit when I was 9 and crochet at 20.  I make chemo hats out of wool ease a lot.  When I was young my neighbor had TB and they taught him to knit in the sanitarium.  He made lovely sweaters for each of his 4 children and hats and mittens.  Guys that knit have great finger dexterity.  BJM

  • my line was….are you knitting me??

  • What fun!!!  How delightful to see and hear such friendship and enjoyment  of one another.

  • Awesome and so funny and happy!!!  I loved it when Julia grabbed the needles from Tom and began knitting away!  Tom’s eyebrows went up over his head and Julia was not even looking at her knitting stitches! What a great feeling to see movie stars and crew members knitting! Thank you so much Lion Brand for sharing this! You have made my day!!!

  • What a great team spoof! It shows that Tom Hanks appreciates the hobbies and skill of his costar. I wonder is any of the crew picked up the joy of knitting?Great choice of yarn,Tom!

  • yeah- I want to know what became of all that wonderful yarn! Wish i was the clean up lady there!! 😉

  • I just love JULIA ROBERTS… I think this was great of Tom .And I am impressed with all the guys being such good sports…Truely guys it is the best relaxation in the world……

  • I do hope that all of this yarn will be knitted into the proper size squares and then stitched together and donated via Warm Up America.  It would be beautiful, wouldn’t it?  Any amount of people could particiapate and/or learn to do this.  Please keep Warm Up America in mind when figuring out what to do with the yarn.

Great idea for a prank and still get something constructive out of it.

  • great prank, so glad all of the folks were into it.  good to see that both big stars were funny in real life and i love julia’s laugh. hip hip hooray for knitting and Julia for always knitting something waiting for the next scene.

  • My husband has been asking me to teach him how to knit. I sure could use his help to use up my yarn stash!

  • Sure hope all the yarn was given to Julia so you can make some scarfs and mittens for the homeless. Enjoy the craft.

  • The “almost there” guy with the yarn all around his neck was so funny!

  • What a wonderful prank and Julia’s laugh is so true to her.   Love  ANYTHING Julia does!

  • I don’t think any of them figured out how to hold the needles.  That was the funniest part to me — how they were holding the needles.  I could never get anything done like that!

  • I didn’t really like Julia Roberts… But now that I know she knits, it’s brought her like ability up 100%! Great prank, love it!

  • This is so funny, I saw the movie Americas sweethearts last week and there was a part in the movie where Julia is knitting. But when I watched it she never completed a stitch and I commented to my daughter that it was obvious she did NOT know how to knit.  Jokes on me.  That is awesome.  My son played football in college and wanted to learn how to knit a scarf for his then girlfriend (now wife) and had so much fun accomplishing his scarf that he taught the rest of the football team and they were knitting on the bus to an out of state game.  LOVE it.

  • just loved to see tom hanks knitting. all those guys looked so funny. most of all just hearing the loud and gorgeous laugh of julie it made my day!

  • I too thought it was so cool that everyone was knitting.  I too love Julia’s laughter.  I hope they continue on knitting not just that one tie as it is so relaxing and therapeutic to say the least.  It also gives you a sense of accomplishment when you finish a project.  Tom is great!

  • Whoever picked the brand of yarn did a good Job.  I really love it.  The colors are so vibriant and the wool is easy to use.  Putting all the squares together and selling it for a charity is a perfect idea.

  • That was great; nice to know Julia enjoys the craft.

  • This is truly a great tale. what a wonderful prank to play on Julia. It is wonderful to see the movie crew be so willing to give it a try and I hope they stick to this fantastic relaxing hobby. I don’t knit but have been crocheting for 60 years and make many beautiful types of adult slippers, hats, scarves, wristers and many others. this brings me great joy and there is more joy in giving than receiving. a gift of a hand made original is appreciated and certainly gives the crafter the priceless experience of creating it. I read where a group of men in N.Y. had a knitting group that met weekly and got great joy in their hobby. so men, guys, boys do not  give up. you can master it but with crocheting only ONE hook is needed not TWO needles so give CROCHET a go. Many happy hours await you.

  • This is hilarious!  I love Julia, I love Tom and I love to knit so this is perfect!  LOL
