Hunger Games Cowl

Catching Fire, the second film in The Hunger Games trilogy (based on the book series), is out in theaters today! If you’re a fan, you’ve likely watched the trailer more than twice, and fawned over the teaser pictures of Katniss wearing her cowl. Well, you can definitely count our Design Department among The Hunger Games’ fans—they all unanimously wanted to create their own versions of this famous cowl.

While the cowl worn in the movie is actually woven, our Design Department wanted a more wearable interpretation while still maintaining a textured look.  According to Jackie, our technical editor, the Design team created the knit version—that was inspired by the original—by using a stockinette stitch and reverse stockinette stitch. While the crochet version got a little more creative, using bobbles on the cowl, to give its armor-like appearance. The yarn is Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick® in Grey Marble, not only because of the colors but because it was also the perfect yarn to create the texture they wanted.

They are very proud of this particular design because it can be a worn as a cowl wrap or just a cowl as a cozy cold weather accessory on its own!

Whether you are from District 1 and wearing it to be fashion savvy, or District 12 and wearing it because it is one of the warmest things you own – our District 12 Cowl Wrap proves this is not just Katniss’ cowl, but everyone’s.

  • Ha! And I WAS looking at her cowl in the movie thinking “hmmmm, I wonder if I could make something like that!” Nice cowls!!!

  • My niece was just raving about the movie and requesting this year’s Christmas. cowl. And then I saw this. I will be printing the knitted version to give it a try. Thanks!

    • Please send us a picture of your finished product when it’s done. We’d love to see it!

  • Any ideas for the other cowl scarf she wears it looks like it could from wool plaid
    and woven?

    • I would suggest using a simple cowl pattern like this one and then twisting the ends before sewing it together to achieve a similar effect. Best yarns would be Homespun Thick & Quick in Herb Garden or Amazing in Rainforest!

  • wow – this caught my eye the minute I opened the newsletter. I thought I was done with my christmas crafting presents …. but. Getting out my needles and warming them up

  • I loved this when I saw the movie & my daughter LOVED it. So I went looking for patterns and couldn’t find it till now . Thanks. This is definitely my next knitting project to start! Thanks Lion Brand.

  • These are great! Talk about putting a smile on my face. I’m already got two Homespun hoodies in my queue for knitting, but maybe after those… 🙂

  • To me, it looks as though the top of Katniss’ cowl might have been made by wrapping the yarn around super thick cording filling that you would find in home decor section of store, and sewn in rows, or knotted, to hold in place. Interesting Idea!

    • I was thinking the same thing about the cording! I wonder if anyone has figured out how to weave one?? 🙂 I think I will!!!
