Let’s Celebrate World Wide Knit and Crochet in Public Day!

World Wide Knit in Public DayIt’s that time of year again: World Wide Knit (and Crochet!) in Public Day is upon us! I love this unofficial holiday because it encourages crafters to come together and celebrate their amazing skills. Now through Sunday, people are gathering all over the globe to show off their yarncrafting skills in public. If you’re in the New York area, you might see some familiar faces at Saturday’s event at the Brooklyn Public Library!

Are you interested in finding a gathering near you? Click here to search the official WWKiP Day website. If there’s no meet up scheduled in your area, you can still celebrate! Simply take your yarn, hooks, and needles to your local coffee shop, park, restaurant, or other public space and start crafting. Make today and every day your own personal WWKiP Day!

Are you celebrating WWKiP Day this year? Where do you plan to crochet or knit in public? Let us know in the comments!

  • I will be crocheting at a local Bread Co!!  I have invited others to join in too!!

  • THREAD CAFE, the knitting club of Brenham Middle School is hosting a WWKiP Day in downtown Brenham, TX on the courthouse lawn on June 26th, from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. Everyone is invited !!  (We are located halfway between Houston and Austin on highway 290 – where they make Blue Bell Ice Cream)Bring a chair.  Cold water provided.  Free restrooms.  Other refreshments nearby.  For more info, call 979.289.3517.

  • I didn’t know about this – wish I had known sooner.  Looks like there were two events in my area, but I already missed them.  I have always been in search of other crocheters in my area and never found a group.  Wonder now if there is a way I can contact those people who had these events to see if they regularly meet and where…so sad that I have been out of the loop and missed it.  🙁

  • Berkey Creamery on the Penn State Campus in State College,PA, is the local gathering place.  (Fantastic ice cream, too!)

  • Our church/charity knitting group is having breakfast at a local cafe which is attached to an art gallery.  We’ll be knitting, crocheting and sipping lattes surrounded by local art!

  • We have a little group that meets every Friday at our local library.  Tuesday the 12th we gathered at our local library to celebrate WWKIP.  One of our local newspapers will be running an article about it.  I can’t wait for next year!

  • Our knit/crochet group, which meets at the local library, sponsored a KIP at the Ella Sharp Park Art & Wine Festival (Jackson, MI) on the 9th of June.  We welcomed some new KnitCroWits and worked away on the porch of the General Store as we tasted the local wines.  Wonderful way to spend a day:)

  • I crochet in public every time I have to wait for a doctor’s appointment, for a child at school, for a meeting to be over, on an airplane…  Anywhere I have time to sit and do it.  You would be surprised how many meetings are easier to sit through if you have your hands busy.  However, I recommend carrying the easy patterns, like simple charity blankets or hats–leave the complicated ones at home where you can concentrate better on your work instead of what is going on around you.  Opens lots of conversations about it too; that’s the best part!

  • Taking the car for yearly inspection today, so I’ll be knitting at Jiffy-Lube in Saratoga Springs, NY.

  • My knitting group will be meeting on the front lawn of the Noble Neighborhood Library in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, this Saturday June 16th.  We all knit in public whenever we go out.  Last night one of our library book discussion members spent her time discussing a Laurie R. King Mystery and crochetting for an afghan.  Officially this group has been around for several years and have all brought knitting to the attention of the public.  We will be thinking of all the knitters in the world and enjoying the wonderful weather and our friendships which have developed while we knit.  Wish you all could be here.

  • Is crocheting on a plane count as public? I crochet in public all the time but I have a rather long flight coming up and I know it’s going to seem less tiresome with some handiwork.

  • I crocheted on the park bench during the Edmonton Alberta Canada Gay Pride Parade.

  • San Antonio, Texas, has TWO locations for WWKIP. Two Meetup groups are joining at The Shops at La Cantera (NW side of town). The other event will be at North Star Mall in North central S.A.

  • I agree with Jessica Ramos… WISH I had known about this earlier.  Maybe crochet/knit websites would pick up on this dilemma and post these events perhaps as much as a month in advance… with perhaps weekly reminders.
I live in a very rural area and would LOVE to meet other crocheters/knitters/seamstresses/stained glass workers/artists/… that list goes on and on.  So you can see how let down I am to have missed this.

    • Do you have a library nearby?? You could start a group there. We have one at our local library & our meetings are in their newsletter. We are a knitting/crochet/cross-stitch group & we also teach anyone wanting to learn any of these.

  • LO I was out crocheting in public without knowing about this event!  I crochet on the bus everytime I go out.  Also at Dr’s offices or anyplace I have to wait.  I don’t usually knit on the bus, bumpy rides can cause dropped stitches.  Will have to mark it in my calendar for next year to see  what’s going on near me.

  • I was crocheting my doily while camping this past weekend. I take my projects everywhere.
