How to Make Tassels in 6 Easy Steps

Tassel

Tassels and pompoms are hot accents for Fall 2017. However, as a crafter you probably learned to appreciate the look of these extra add-ons to your projects before it became trendy to attach them to everything.

Tassels are easy to make and are great for using leftover yarn.

Materials

  • Cardboard cut to desired dimensions (see Step 1)
  • Yarn of your choice (yarn shown is Vanna's Style)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Step 1

Tassel

Cut a piece of cardboard to your desired size. The cardboard shown measures 4.5" long by 3" wide and produced a finished tassel of 4" in length (the yarn will spring up slightly once removed from the cardboard). If no cardboard is handy you can also use items like a coaster, playing card, or even your phone.

Step 2

Tassel

Holding the yarn with relaxed tension, wrap around cardboard until it is as full as you like. There is no right or wrong here. The more times you wrap, the fuller the tassel will be. The yarn shown is a CYC#3 (Vanna's Style) and was wrapped 45 times around the cardboard.

Step 3

Tassel

First secure the loops at the top by lacing a piece of scrap yarn under the strands and tying in a knot. Then gently slide the wraps off of the cardboard.

Step 4

Tassel

Cut a length of yarn and begin wrapping below the tie from the previous step. Pull this somewhat tight to secure.

Step 5

Tassel

Using a yarn needle, secure your working yarn by threading it under the wraps.

Step 6

Tassel

Once the wraps are all secured you may cut the bottom loops to creat an open fringe. Trim any uneven portions as necessary.

Finished!

Now that you've seen how simple tassels are to make, go forth and add them to all your projects!
