Let’s say that one day, you’re working on that lovely cable project you’ve been looking forward to starting, it’s time for you to start your cable – you dig through your pouch full of notions and somehow, your cable needle is nowhere to be found! Oh no… now what?

I’m sure many of you have experienced working on a cable project with no cable needle nearby, and you have probably used something else in substitution of the cable needle – a pen, pencil, straw, etc.  But did you know that you can also cable without any needle at all, and it’s quite simple.  We have an easy tutorial with step by step images showing you how to cable without a cable needle, which you can find here – but now, you can watch the tutorial in action by viewing the video below!

  • Please fix the PIN link…the picture doesn’t work and prevents it from pinning.

    • Hi there, unfortunately, we’re not sure why the on-site pin button has trouble with videos. However, we’ve pinned it to our Pinterest, so you can repin it:

  • *because* Sorry about that

  • I’ve NEVER used a cable needle! I lose things too easily to keep spending that kind of money — paper clips work wonderfully!

  • Why doesn’t teacher keep knitting and show us the return side? I think she could just start video by saying – here’s another way to cable and spend more time on showing us several rows

  • I found out the hard way that cable needles and socks on double-pointed needles do not mix well. Unless you a knitting a sock for Bigfoot there is simply not enough room to fit all the pointy things without risking injury. The only difference with my technique is that I slip the first group of stitches, knit the next group, then drop all the cable stitches off the right needle, then pick up the knitted stitches with the right needle, then the slipped stitches with the left needle then knit the slipped stitches. I don’t know if that description makes any sense but it seems to work better (at least on socks) than what the video shows.
