Enter to Win One of Four $25 Gift Certificates

We have never failed to be amazed at the creativity of our readers.  We were so impressed with your entries for our Father’s Day Lola caption contest and you seemed to enjoy participating, so here’s another chance to win some free yarn from the Lion Brand web site.

This contest is for writing a yarn or craft-related Haiku.  For those of you who have an idea about what a Haiku is but haven’t had an opportunity to write one since middle school, here’s a reminder.  A Haiku is a Japanese form of poetry.  For the purpose of this contest, we will follow the most common rule of writing Haiku:  three lines with the first line having 5 syllables, the second line having 7 syllables, and the third line having 5 syllables. Here’s an example:

  • Blog comments filled
    with random haiku today
    Click link to submit

  • Not only are people posting haikus in the wrong place, but most of them aren’t even following the 5-7-5 rule!! I hope syllables are counted to win! 🙂

  • It’s not my entry:
    Words, like yarn, my medium
    Haiku knit maven

    Haiku and knitting
    Competition made for me
    Pen and needles poised

  • KatherineR zings
    Zeitgeist of the comment threads
    Summed up in three lines

  • I notice a lot of the Haikus posted on the blog aren’t keeping with the correct amount of syllables per-line. Will you disqualify entries that are not written in the 5, 7, 5 format? Just curious.
    Thank you.

Zontee says: Hi Mia, first-off entries left as comments on the blog will NOT be counted as stated above, and yes, we will not count entries not in the correct format.

  • I am not sure my submission went through. After I clicked DONE, it went to a monkey survey screen(???). Can you tell me if you received my submission? Thanks.

Zontee says: Hi Julie, yes, if you got the SurveyMonkey screen (our survey form provider), then your entry went through.

  • When submitting an entry, does it have to be one paragraph of the 5-7-5 format or can you put multiples? meaning I have a haiku that is 5-7-5 and then another 5-7-5 that is a continuation.

Zontee says: Hi Rachelle, a haiku is only 3 lines total.

  • I, too, am wondering if my post went through. Mine went to survey monkey, too.

Crystal says: Hi Julie, yes, if you got the SurveyMonkey screen (our survey form provider), then your entry went through.

  • Yeah, the Monkey survey is a bit confusing. It should say ‘Entry Complete’ or something a bit more acknowledging. However, since we are all getting the same thing, I imagine it’s going through.

  • Survey Monkey was used to create the Contest Entry. Survey Monkey always advertises when a survey is completed. They have only one completed page and that is what you see when your entry is completed.

Zontee says: Hi Patty, yes, it correct that the default page when you complete the survey is the SurveyMonkey page, but I’m going to switch it to LionBrand.com so that people don’t get confused by the advertisement. Thanks for clarifying for other people.

  • I LOVE the fact that LionBrand has SO many ways to participate and create (and not just with needles and yarn)!!! Another awesome contest LB!!!! (This is why I keep coming back for more!) … And OF COURSE, I submitted my entry. 🙂 I’m curious to see all (or a majority) of the entries. (Best of luck choosing just four…)

  • I submitted my poem, clicked on “done” but did NOT get the Survey Monkey. Mine went to the home page. I tried it the second time and got the same result. Now I’m confused !!!! Should I get the Survey Monkey???

Zontee says: Hi Kathy, we changed the completion page to LionBrand.com — if you got our Home Page then you completed your entry and it went through.

  • The colors of yarn
On two needles in my hand
    Knit one, purl two, turn

Yes, I did fill out the entry form. Just wanted to share with your blog readers too.

  • My submission also went to the home page. So I’m wondering the same thing

Zontee says: Hi Sondra, we changed the completion page to LionBrand.com — if you got our Home Page then you completed your entry and it went through.

  • My submission also went to the Lionbrand homepage; I didn’t get a Survey Monkey screen. I am using Mozilla. Is that a problem? I would like to know if my submission was accepted or not.

Zontee says: Hi Susan, we changed the completion page to LionBrand.com — if you got our Home Page then you completed your entry and it went through.

  • Zontee,

thank you for clarifying. I knew that the blog Haikus didn’t count, but I was still curious if the 5, 7, 5 form would be counted for the actual entries. Thanks again for clearing that up, I appreciate it. I guess you guys have a lot of clapping out syllables ahead of you. Good luck! This contest is a really fun idea. I can’t wait for the next one, I’m looking forward to it already.

  • When I entered my Haiku, it did not go to any Monkey whatever. Does this mean it did not go through? It’s getting confusing with all these non-Haiku Haikus!

Zontee says: Hi Marjorie, we changed the completion page to LionBrand.com — if you got our Home Page then you completed your entry and it went through.

  • Please do not publish my full name. Thank you. I hope I’m not too late. I should have read the rules more carefully. Sorry.

Zontee says: Hi Marjorie, I changed your name on your last comment. Please note for next time that however you type your name into the box when you’re commenting is how it’s going to show up.

  • Oooooh, I can’t wait to work on this one. I even blogged about it (link below) and added it to my sidebar about contests and giveaways…

    What fun.

  • What a great idea – always something fun to learn and gift ideas to share in order to help others. Love the many patterns for future gifts.

  • Touching, feeling threads
    Counting, clicking, row by row
    Warmth, beauty, fiber.

  • I’m assuming that the survey is not done with each submission and that participants are selected at random. Is this correct, because when I clicked “done” it went to the LBY homepage as well.

Zontee says: Hi Genie, sorry, I don’t follow your question, so let me know if I don’t answer it. If you finished the survey, it WILL take you to the LionBrand.com home page, signifying that you’re finished with it. As we said in earlier comments, we will be picking our favorite 4 entries for the winners.

  • Knit all day

Love all the choices I have

    Knit all night

  • God forbid Lion Brand has a sonnet writing contest!

But seriously, next year a Limerick might be fun.

  • For a great pick-me-up: Crochet a shell top with one or more buffet style Lion Brand Yarns. Creating your own pattern to reflect your “old” mood thereby proudly peacocking your “new” mood outfit. A good way to restore the Mind-Space.

  • I did not get the survey monkey either, so just wondering if my submission was accepted.
    Thanks.

Zontee says: Hi Donna, we changed the completion page to LionBrand.com — if you got our Home Page then you completed your entry and it went through.

  • Click of needles on

  • Did not see the MONKEY either. Just the homepage. Unable to make a 2nd attempt to reenter. Let me know if my entry went through at my email.
    Loved the Haiku, Lil

Zontee says: Hi Lil, we changed the completion page to LionBrand.com — if you got our Home Page then you completed your entry and it went through.

  • Just wondering…

I entered my haiku, only once submitted, no sort of confirmation is posted. Rather, the server returns you to the main page. How can we ensure that our entries were received?

Zontee says: Hi DJ, we changed the completion page to LionBrand.com — if you got our Home Page then you completed your entry and it went through.

  • Filled out a haiku entry form and hit “Done”. Was sent to (disabled) survey monkey 3 times.
Is this normal? Was my entry received?

Zontee says: Hi Marilyn, yes, as we’ve said in response to earlier questions, if you got the SurveyMonkey page, then you completed your entry and it was received.

  • I entered the right way, and now I want to share another one here, just for fun. (It’s not an entry).

    So much yarn! What joy!
    Knitting frenzy begins….NOW.
    Uh oh…where’s the cat?

  • Beautiful colors//worked in different patterns//Brings me lots of joy

  • You do know that a Haiku is 5/7/5 syallabls AND ABOUT NATURE. Just the syallable count does not a Haiku make.

Zontee says: Hi Alicia, yes, we’re aware that traditional haikus are about nature; however, it’s also become a popular format for fun poem contests like this one. We want people to have fun with the traditional format and challenge themselves to express themselves in a set number of syllables.

  • Want to knit a cat;
    looked through many sources, and
    who would have a rat?

In all seriousness, I am looking for all knitting patterns for afghans I can find which feature cats. Also, I’ve seen knit blocks with an animal in them which is knit in with the pattern, not using colors, so I’m also dreaming up a cat afghan which would feature several different cat poses and things cats like (birds, fish, balls, mice, etc.) in separate blocks. I’d also like to do a similar afghan for a good friend whose nickname from way back is Rat, and I think the subtle approach with a rat (or large mouse?) patterned square repeated as many times as necessary, or maybe relieved by some squares with a hunk of cheese. I know I’m asking for a lot, but I’m no designer of knitting patterns, so I need all the help I can get!

Zontee says: Hi C. Eidel, we don’t have any cat/rat afghan block patterns, but perhaps a quick Google search or a search on the yarn community Ravelry.com (which has an extensive pattern database) will help you find a source. Another good resource is Lily Chin’s books, Crochet Tips & Tricks and Knitting Tips and Tricks both of which explain how you can create your own charts for knitting or crocheting (or duplicate stitching or cross-stitching) a design out of any photo. Then you could just find a bunch of images you want to use and create your own pattern blocks. Hope that helps!

  • I bought some new yarn,
    but I have lost my G hook;
    no poncho today

  • Can we enter the contest more than once?

Zontee says: Hi Susan, no, you can’t.

  • If your Feeling some stress.
Pick up those stick, find some yarn,
Needles poised, have a good day.

  • Pick up a penny
Save it for a rainy day
    Get more yarn to play

  • Sorry I thought this was the submission page for the contest.Duh!!!!!!!!

  • I just entered the contest but just noticed I made a mistake on the second line–too many syllables and the program won’t let me back in to change! The second line should read:

    weaving fiber, back and forth

I hope I still have a chance! Thanks!

  • I left a haiku late last week, which was incorrect. I submitted another one today. Please accept the one on 6/19/10. Thanks.

  • I think I submitted my entry. How will I know that the folks at Lion Brand got it?

Zontee says: Hi Marisa, if you got either the SurveyMonkey.com page or the LionBrand.com home page, then your entry went through.

  • give us the damn yarn
    results can be optimal
    yes, this is a threat

😀 Entered on submission page. Fun contest!

  • If Sleeping Beauty had Lion
No years in time spent plying
    Only shawls and dreamy balls.

  • I’m amazed at how many people don’t follow instructions. Why are so many writing their entries on the blog page when it’s clearly stated that those will not be counted?
PLEASE NOTE that comments left here on the blog will NOT be counted. Please click the link above to submit an entry.
How difficult is that to understand?

  • @ Patricia McCowan:

Maybe they just want to post their poems for everyone. Its for fun. How difficult is fun to understand?

  • Uh oh, Patty is here to put an end to the fun. 🙁

We’re just having fun with it. Stop being a stick in the mud and think up more haiku to share. :P. It’s fun when you get on a roll.

  • Hi!
Thanks for the great newsletters; I love them! I just entered your Haiku contest & right after clicking, I thought of a better word for line 2. I REALLY hope I can make that change…pretty please? What is the best way to do that?
    Thank you,
    Cheri Stuller

Zontee says: Hi Cheri, sorry, but once you’ve entered, the system doesn’t allow you to go back and change your entry.

  • Soft, tender, cozy
