Announcing Our Spring 2010 Crochet-Along!

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Crochet Beach CardiganEach season we host a knit- or crochet-along, a virtual event in which yarncrafters come together here online to work on one pattern together, share their experiences, and to learn together. There’s no need to sign up; simply follow along with the blog posts at your own pace.

We asked you what crochet garment you’d like to make, and you picked our Beach Cover-up/Cardigan! (Click on the photo to view and download the pattern.)

Our CAL host will be Kendra! She works at the Lion Brand Yarn Studio and is a crochet and knitting instructor, so she will have plenty of great insights for you. Click here to learn more about her. Look for her first post on Thursday, April 8. Until then, think about which supplies you’ll need and in which color you’ll be making this versatile cardigan! If you’re in the New York City area, stop by the Lion Brand Yarn Studio to see our version made in Nature’s Choice Organic Cotton in Khaki.

  • Hi! Maren from Sunny So-Cal here! I’m so excited to participate in my first crochet-along! I’ve always wanted to do one, and as I got to participate in the “picking” of the project (and the one I wanted was picked!) I will be trying to do it this time! 😀 I’ll be making this for myself, as I’ve wanted to make something like this for myself for about 10 years now, and never had/made the time to do it. I seem to always be crocheting for others, but never myself! 🙂 I’ll have to figure out what color/yarn I’m going to use, but I’ll probably go for something versatile like a black or brown.

  • Welcome Maren! Nana from Dallas, Texas here – this is my second crochet-along. I am loving the sweater – it will be a perfect sweater for my office when it gets chilly from the A/C!

Only gripe I have is the yarm – the yarn suggested cost 6.99 at my local store (just got back from running over there) – that’s $100 in yarn!! I’m gonna have to find something more in line with my budget! We’ll see…

    Excited to get started!

  • I see what you mean about the yarn cost! EEK! My local store doesn’t carry this yarn, and it would be well over $100 for me to order it. I think I may use Glitterspun- it’s 25% off, and they are offering free shipping right now, so that would be $65. Still pricey, so I may keep looking…

Zontee says: Hi Maren, Kendra will talk about different yarn options next week, so you can wait for those recommendations if you prefer.

  • It is a beautiful design, but too far out of my budget as well. One of these days I’ll join a crochet-along!

  • My name is Hope and I’m from Virginia. I would love to make this for myself but any suggestions on yarn substitutions as this yarn is way out of my budget range? Not just from Kendra but from anyone?

Zontee says: Hi Hope, again, Kendra will talk about different yarn options next week, so you can wait for those recommendations if you prefer.

  • I would be interested in finding out how to substitute yarn for this project as well. I’d love to crochet along but finances are limited at the moment.

Zontee says: Hi Sunday, again, Kendra will talk about different yarn options next week, so you can wait for those recommendations if you prefer.

  • Although I love the organic cotton, it’s too pricey for me on this project. I’ll likely go with Cotton-ease. I’ve worked with Cotton-ease many times, and it’s one of my very favorite yarns to work with. It substitutes well for the organic cotton (it’s the same category #4), but it’s a bit cheaper, and, especially beneficial, it’s machine wash.

Plus, if you look for Hobby Lobby and Michael’s coupons, you can get 40%.

    Jennie

  • I like the cotton-ease brand as well and I will be purchasing it for this project. They have great colors too. I am excited for this to be my first crochet-along project.

I am making this for my self and hope I can keep up. I am pregnant and due in July plus I have two other little ones.

    Great to be here!

  • Hi everyone! My name is Selena and I’m from Sunny Florida! I’m with you guys, I think that the Organic Cotton is far too pricey for a Beach Cardigan. I’m going to try to find a different cotton that I like for this project, but I do plan on working on it! It’s my first crochet-along with Lion Brand, and I hope that I can keep up! It always seems like I have so many other projects on my list!!

Good meeting you all and I look forward to seeing your finished projects!

  • this is definitely a good spring, because i finally have a chance to participate and this is a pattern i had bookmarked to do in the future. i’m excited for my first crochet-along.

  • I see that this is an Organic Cotton to be used. I also see that it is a 4 Medium: worsted-weight yarn. Also you would have to wash by hand. Since I don’t like to wash things by hand I will be looking into getting 4 Medium : worsted weight of something else. Just make a swatch to make sure the gauge is right. It will also be cheaper for the wallet.

  • I have been wanting to do a Crochet/Knit-along and love this sweater. I’ll commit after finding the right budget-friendly yarn. … Glad to hear from other ladies that I’m not the only one…Too exciting!

  • Hello. My name is Darah and this will be my first CAL as well. I am very excited to start this project as this was the one I voted for. Hopefully I can keep up since I have so many projects going in right now, but at least once the directions are posted you can go at your own pace. Nice to meet everyone and I can’t wait to crochet with you!

  • Have some yarn from another project so will just need to get a few more to make this one (looks really easy), have never done a garment yet and am looking forward to sharing the experience. I am also from sunny So-Cal.

  • Hello Everyone, My name is Cheryl. I have been wanting to do a crochet-along for some time and this sweater is one that I have been looking at. I even started this sweater combined with another sweater for a coworkers granddaughter. So I think that I will come along too. Thank. Nice meeting you all.

  • Hi! I’d love to join the crochet-along because I love the cardigan that was chosen (it’s the one I voted for). I’ve never crocheted more than small and easy things like hats, scarves and socks. Also, I’ll have to wait until I return from holidays and the majority of my activities end in about 3 weeks. I’m sure I’ll catch up quickly though, because when I start a project, I’m like a dog with a bone, I just have to work on it a lot in the evenings. Like most of you, I want to wait to see the yarn substitutions. I’m from Quebec, Canada, retired (not much money) and yarn prices are through the roof here.

  • Hi. My name is Wendy and this would be my first crochet Along. I’m in Virginia and so very excited to be doing something for me for a change. The sweater is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Thanks

  • How exciting is this! I agree that the price of yarn will be a problem and can’t wait until the substitutions are posted next week.

I have made 5 afghans last winter here in Indiana, if that tells you about the weather here, lol. I have made shawls, but have always wanted to make a sweather. I am excited too, and its nice to meet fellow crocheters. Good luck to everyone, and may all your stitches be pretty ones.

  • LOL, better learn to spell sweater if I am going to make this project!

  • Hi My name is Lisa from Fort Wayne IN. I think I will join in on this. I also will have to go to cheaper yarn. I am vision impaired, but love to crochet. I have never attempted a sweater before and I am hoping it will be a grand time.

  • Hi Everyone, I also voted for this sweater and in Ohio you never know what the weaher will be like. Right now it is 80 and sunny just in time for Easter. I will probably use cotton ease also and if anyone has a Michaels near you they have a coupon for April 3rd for 30% entire purchase including sale items.

  • Another first timer! Both for a crochet-a-long project as well as something bigger than a scarf/hat/boots. But I love the look of this sweater so much I can’t help but try. Now let’s see if I can keep it up???

Kendra says: You don’t need to stress about keeping up! I’ll have new posts every week but you can work at your own pace, hopefully motivated by seeing other comments and updates 🙂 But be sure to have fun above all!

  • Hi – I’m planning on participating and will also need to find a more reasonably priced yarn. I live in Oakdale, Ca; am a grandma and am in graduate school at California State University, Stanislaus. But I’ll be off from school for the summer and my job is half time. The timing couldn’t be better for me. AND this will be perfect for at my office where sometimes it’s cold, sometime’s hot and sometimes just right.

  • Hi, this looks like fun! I’m in central Wisconsin and haven’t crocheted anything but scarves and afghans. I haven’t decided if I’m making it for myself or one of my daughters.

  • Greetings All, I’m from SW Ontario, and look forward to this CAL to help keep me sane as I move through a major life change situation. I will be using something from my stash, and I think I’ll look for a bright, uplifting colourway.

  • I was thrilled to see the XXL size and since I will need even more yarn than many of you, I too look forward to the substitutions suggested. I have been wanting to do a crochet along, but this is my first chance to participate. I am an avid crocheter and I love this pattern. Oh, and I live in southeastern Louisiana. I look forward to seeing your creations.

  • This is the project I voted for as well, so I might just do my first CAL! It will definitely depend on yarn costs though – I believe there is a coupon in the paper for 30% off entire purchase at Michael’s tomorrow, April 3. I think I will take that coupon to JoAnn’s to look for yarn – they honor competitor coupons. As long as the yarn is the same size, it should work!
BTW, I’m from Colorado and we definitely use sweaters here, year round!

  • I think I will try to do this. I like the look of the sweater. I usually on do very easy baby blankets and I want to try something different. Everyone sounds so excited and I am too. The cost is mentioned of the yarn, but I look forward to seeing what other options are available.

  • This is my first crochet along. I commute a long way to work, so this will keep me busy. BTW, that’s in crazy NYC. Looking forward to trying something with more shape and for myself! I like to make presents, but this time I’m being selfish. Can’t wait to start!

  • Hi. I’m new to crochet-alongs… but I am a seasoned “crocheter”! I’ve been looking at this pattern for quite a while. Can’t wait to get started!

  • This will be my first crochet-a-long. Not sure if I will use it as a beach cover up, or just something I can keep at work to throw on during those chilly air conditioned days.

I also look forward to hearing about some yean options.

I look forward to getting started!

  • Not only is this yarn too pricey but it’s heavyweight and stretches a lot. I made a knitted shawl with it. It’s comfortable but heavy. I has stetched but I don’t mind since it does not affect the wear.
It also takes forever to dry. I would never make a beach coverup with it.
I might try this in Cotton Ease.

  • BTW, you can find yarn substitutions on the LB site. I’m thinking the best choice is going to be Vanna’s Choice – low cost, but still a nice yarn. Since I will have to make the biggest size for myself, I need a lower cost yarn and I have enjoyed working with Vanna’s Choice in the past.

  • Hi, my name is Donna and I am from the Tourist Capital of the world (Orlando). This Crochet Along is going to be so much fun!!!

  • Cannot wait to start this project, YARN SUBSITUTIONS PLEASE… wow 100 dollars seems exteme for a beach cover up, as i see everyone feels the same.. cannot wait too see.

Zontee says: Hi Faye, again, Kendra’s first post will include alternate yarns.

  • Is there going to be a group on Ravelry? If not, I would love to set one up.

    Cora

Kendra says: Thanks for setting it up! Looking forward to the discussions that go on there 🙂

  • Hi everyone, I’m about an hour north of Chicago and I too have been waiting to make this for myself. I am also a first timer with CAL’s but I have had a hook in my hand every day for five years-I will also find a less expensive yarn , I am partial to a satin something-or-other with an earthy color.Jennie above was correct about the local coupons
Good luck Tricia(#20) and to everyone else!! It was fun to read about everyone, and cannot wait to get started
-right after I finish my blanket, hats & dogbed,LOL

  • Hello from Quebec Canada. This will be my first CAL. I’m not an avid crocheter, I knit mostly but I liked this cover-up so I’m jumping in… As for the yarn I went with Knit Picks Organic Cotton, I’m making it for about $40.00US. Can’t wait for the yarn to arrive

  • I’ve been reading all the comments and want to make this also. Would be my first sweater. I was looking at the category 4 yarns on LB web site and thought Pound of love would be a good deal. You would need 2 of them with lots left over, even for the largest size. I’ve used this yarn before and I like it. It is marked a #4 yarn but seams a little thinner to me. But if you get this yarn you’ll have plenty, and it’s machine washable and dryable. well that’s my thought for now.
    Info: #4 yarn needed: small 1236 yards…Large 1442 yards…and 1x/2x 1648 yards. is what I figured.

  • Hey everyone. So excited to get started. Only one problem… I need it to be a little larger in circumference. Should I just use a larger hook, or add more stitches to it????? Thanks.

Kendra says: Sounds to me like it will work, but the way to know is to make a gauge swatch. Play around with a large enough swatch, about 6″ x 6″, to really get a good idea of how the larger hook will increase your finished product, including washing and blocking the swatch as you will the sweater. I’ll cover this in my post next week as well, but hope that gives you a starting point. As long as you like the look of the fabric with a larger hook, this is far simpler than increasing the number of stitches.

  • I’ll be doing a crochet-along for the first time, but it’s far from my first project! I’m choosing a different yarn as well-the Organic Cotton is a bit pricey for me, but I’ve got something in my yarn stash to substitute. Glad to meet you all!

  • I’m from good ole Fayetteville, NC! My hands don’t work anymore BUT I’m excited to try to make this! I’m going to make it for myself…yeah, something for Gramma!!

  • Hi to everyone and am looking forward to crocheting this neat sweater. Will need to make some adjustments for sizing, so am hoping I will get some good tips from others. Also am thinking of using Vanna yarn or Cotton-Ease.

  • Hi there! I’m Jen, and I’m in Portland, Oregon. This is my first CAL and I’m really looking forward to this project! I also cringed at the cost of this yarn, so I am going to wait to see what recommendations Kendra will make about other types of yarn to use, and if she feels cotton would be the best choice of yarn in general for something like this… I love Vanna yarn and all the colors to choose from, so I might go with that.

  • Was wondering if Kendra could make adjustments for those of us who may not want a hoodie, but instead, just a collar? (I didn’t read down far enough)[when I voted] to see that it was a hoodie. Perhaps also add a couple well place button holes?

Kendra says: I’ll see what I can do about collar suggestions – it’s a good topic to cover. As far as button holes, they should be pretty simple to add because the edges of the sweater are more dense and could easily have a button hole incorporated. Personally, I think crocheted loops added after the fact would work better in this case given the shape and fit of the sweater. This way, you can add them after you have tried on the finished sweater and determine where they will work best. Great ideas!

  • I’m looking forward to entering my first crochet-along! I love the project. I do not have a lot of free time to crochet due to being in school, along with a full time teaching job, so it will take me a while to complete the project. It will be a wonderful stress relief from the pressures of studying and am so excited about knowing that I’m sharing this activity with other crocheters!

  • I made it on my own last year with a less expensive yarn. It ran really big and the sleeves are huge. If you’re good enough to know how to make adjustments, I would suggest you do that.

  • Hi, I’m from the great city Gilbert in the greater state of AZ. This will be my first CAL and am looking forward to it. I’ve done lots of afghans and scarfs but this will be my first garment. Looking forward to doing it.

  • I just found cotton-ease yarn at Amazon.com in some really nice colors for $2.81. I think I will get my yarn there in the berry or lake colors.

  • Hi all, I’m from the tinest state, R.I. Use to live in Gilbert, AZ. Hi Sharon W. I have wanted to make a beachy cover but I think I will make it longer (like a coat), I need it to be real simple and easy, as I am a blonde and 62 yrs old……lol..so here we go….

Kendra says: This is a great project for you then! There is no shaping for the body (so it’s pretty simple!) and it’s really easy to make longer – just work the repeating body section for as long as you want (more than the 20 inches in the pattern). Just be sure to buy extra yarn to accommodate the longer coat!

  • Hey Sandi if she can’t do the button holed you could make crocheted loops to slip over large buttons.

  • I am a SAHM of 3 from Eastern Shore MD. I crochet for sanity puroposes and this is my first CAL. The sweater looks absolutely wonderful. I can’t wait to make it. I have several skeins of Vannas choice/Taupe in my stash… I love finding patterns to use what I already have!!! hehe so does my husband.

  • Hi all, I’m Ayelet and I’m from Israel. Been wanting to make this gorgeous cardigan for quite a while and would love to crochet along.
We don’t have organic cotton around here, so I’m thinking about Bamboo yarn as a substitute. I’ll go next week to look for something adequate 🙂

  • My name is Kimberly (simmywade) and I am excited to try this out. I have never done a crochet along but I wanted to make this for my mom. I will be using the super saver red heart yarn, not organic but one I can afford. I will probably use the softer brand of this I think my mom will love it. I have a blog that I just did a tutorial on how to make the bunny basket from this site so I am going to post my progress on there as I go. http://mybugaloo.wordpress.com/ Happy Crocheting!

  • I’ll be doing a crochet-along for the first time, but it’s far from my first project! I’m choosing a different yarn as well-the Organic Cotton is a bit pricey for me, but I’ve got something in my yarn stash to substitute. Glad to meet you all

  • I would love to join the crochet along and this would be my first one. I have tried to crochet sweaters before but they never seem to turn out right. So having all of you and a teacher would be great. I will need a more cost-friendly yarn to make the project as where I live there are plans to cut teacher pay. I am a teacher so I am watching my money. Can’t wait to get started on this cover-up.

  • WOW: I was contemplating making this pattern but not quite so long. I’m short, so I thought something more just below the waist. Need some suggestions for yarn substitutions. Whoooopeeee

  • My second choice for a project. I need to go find the yarn and get started.

  • Hi: I love the look of the sweater. I made a baby blanket in organic cotton and it was very heavy and stretchy. I’d be interested in alternatives.

I write the crochet mystery series for Berkley. A Stitch in Crime came out in February.

  • I’m from Winnipeg, Canada where we have been having hail and rain throughout the day. I’m not thinking of a beach cover-up yet, but as a cardigan this will be a wonderful project. I haven’t participated in a crochet-along before, but am really looking forward to it. Best of luck to everyone!

  • This is my first crochet along and I am looking forward to participating. It’ll be nice to make something that is just for me.

  • I’m Jessica, another southern California gal. Love this! I will be making it for myself and use as a beach cover up. This is my first crochet-along and can’t wait to get started!

  • This is my first CAL also – I look forward to being committed to following a printed pattern; Hhve been crocheting prayer shawls, but they’ve been make-up-as-you-go-along patterns – lol! I need something like this for boating. Can’t wait to get started!

  • Hi everyone! While I have crocheted for many years this is a different project and I too am looking forward to CAL. Need something to cover the bathing suit in sunny South Carolina 🙂

  • Hi, I’m from Sydney Australia and I’d love to make this. Unfortunately we don’t have this kind of yarn here. Also, we are heading into winter so it may not be suitable at this time. By the time spring comes here I hope to have found a suitable yarn so that I can make it. It’s lovely.

  • Hi! This is my 1st CAL by Lion Brand. What a great project! My name is Regina, I live in Levittown, NY. Looks like I’ll be visiting the studio to see the project, and meet Kendra so I can get her work schedule to attend any meet-ups during this CAL.

  • Well, I was looking forward to joining the CAL, but since the pattern doesn’t come in a 3X size. . .not this time. How ’bout it — sizing things for at least the typical sizes one finds in stores? Oh well

  • Hi! Nancy here, from Arkansas. I think I want to play along–I’ve never done a CAL, and it sounds like fun. But I have to get really busy and finish the sweater I’m working on now, because I stopped working on it to do some other projects once, and had to rip it all out because my stitches didn’t match the prvious work! If I do this one, I will probably make it as a gift–for whom remains to be seen. Somehow, my projects never end up the size I intend for them!

  • I’m so excited! My first CAL and it’s the perfect sweater for my office! I too will be looking out for any yarn substitutions (as I have quite the stash of misc. yarns already)!

  • I would love to join this CAL but, unfortunately, there are two other projects I need to finish before starting another project. This beach cover/cardigan is just what I have been looking for. Hopefully, I’ll be finished soon with my other crochet items so I can get started on this one. I live in Southaven, MS and the weather is perfect for this sweater.

When the yarn substitution post comes out, I’ll have to check my stash to see if I have anything comparable. $100 for one project is way to steep for me.

  • Hi everyone this will be my first chrochet along also and am looking forward to it! I also will be waiting for suggestions as to different yarns, I live in a coastal town in Oregon I love this cover up and will be making it for myself.
    happy chrocheting!

  • Yarn substition suggestion. I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes, but I think that anyone that wants to increase their skills should grab hold of the opportunity. For other projects I have substitued recycled cotton yarn from old sweaters that I was able to find at the local used clothing store…just a thought and this allowed me to be able to “afford” to do a project when otherwise I could not have done it.

  • Hi, I’m Kat from South NJ. This is my second CAL, and I really enjoyed the first. I’m glad you said the pattern runs big, Debra P, because I need about 2 more inches on each side, and I’ve never done any clothing before. So here’s hoping armholes are not the bugger bears I’ve always been afraid of!

Kendra says: Don’t worry, we’ll get there! I’ll talk about the armholes when it’s time, and the construction of this sweater makes them pretty simple.

  • I’m excited about CAL! I’m new to this process so I’m eager to see how it works. I like the pattern very much, but will have to find an alternative yarn because of the price. I appreciate suggestions for alternatives from others’ posts. I’m from Florida so this may be the perfect summer cardigan as long as it’s not too heavy. I also want a yarn that is machine washable and will hold its shape pretty well.

  • This would be my first crochet garment – my total experience is with chemo caps and scarves. I’m glad to see others have budget concerns – especially on a first time project, I don’t want to have $100 wrapped up in yarn. This should be a fun time to learn.

  • Hi, Reannin from Southern California. This will be my first CAL and I’m really excited to try it out. I’ve made many afghans, scarves and even a duster before and am looking forward to expanding the project folder. I too will be substituting yarn and will definitely be using my Michael’s coupon tomorrow. Happy crocheting to all and good luck. 🙂

  • I’ve never crocheted a garment before so this looks like the perfect opportunity to try. I’ve made purses & bags, scarves, hats, & afghans. Now it’s time to branch out into clothing. We’ll see what happens and I hope I can keep up.

  • Oh, and I forgot to say I’m from St. Louis.

  • Hi all! I am Beth from Tucson, AZ. This CAL sounds awesome! It will be my first attempt, but I have been teaching myself new patterns for a while, and am eager to participate! It is almost never cool enough here for me to wear real sweaters, and will enjoy making something for myself (for the first time ever)!

  • I love this sweater! I have been looking at it for some time wishing I would make it for me. Now is the time. This is my first CAL. My friend and I go “hooking” at McDonalds several nights a week. We order a senior coffee and with free refills work and talk for 3-4 hours. I have been crocheting afghans for the Red Cross and currently have 4 in progress. I live in Summerville, South Carolina.

  • Hi All,
I am Jackie from the Jersey Shore, (New Jersey that is). I have been making crocheted items for the preemies and homeless soles for years. I love this sweater and I think I am going to make it for myself or my granddaughter. I am using from my already full supply of yarns. This is my first CAL I know it is going to be a fun experience. Good Luck to all

  • Hey to everyone. I’m Bobbie Lou and I live in Holly Springs, N.C. I crochet a lot, but have never made a sweater/cover-up. This is my first CAL and I’m looking forward to learning how to make this sweater. How do I get the pattern/instructions and how much yarn do I need to purchase? I think I will use Vanna’s Choice yarn. I love all the pretty colors. I’m so excited and so anxious to get this sweater started. Good luck and blessings to you all.
Kendra says: The pattern is available from LionBrand.com. You can get it by clicking in the post above. You’ll just need a free account to access it. Vanna’s would be an excellent choice – here are the yardage estimates by size: 1236yds (S/M), 1442 yds (L), 1648 (1XL/2XL). Welcome!

  • Hi, I am Pressy from India. I enjoy going through your newsletter. I would have loved to join in. However due to the time difference it will not be possble to join in . I want to make this for my daughter who is studying in Australia so I am going to try making it. If I do need help, I hope I can write in.

All the best to those who are going to join in.
    Good Luck to all

  • I’m looking forward to this. It looks fun. Of course, mine will be blue.

  • Hi! I’m also new to CAL and am looking forward to having crochet companions for the first time. I’d also like a machine wash/machine dry option for this project. I’m a teacher and all sorts of things end up on my sweaters! Can’t wait to see Kendra’s suggestions.

  • Hi Everyone,
My name is Carol from Schaumburg Illinois and I, too am considering doing this project. Like you all, I will have to use a more budget friendly yarn… and so I will “tune in” to see what the recommendations are, and in the meantime take a look at the Cotton Ease you all are talking about.

  • Hi, everyone. I’m Linda T from Cumming, Georgia (about 25 miles north of Atlanta.) I’ve been crocheting and knitting since I was about 9 years old, over 50 years now. This will be my first CAL with Lion Brand, but I’m a regular at crochetville.org. I’ll be yarn shopping later today and will also be using something other than the organic cotton, probably a synthetic so that it’s easy to keep clean.

  • Hi Everyone, I’m from sunny So. California. This is my first CAL. Got my Michaels coupon. So I’m off to check out the yarns today. I seldom make anything for myself. I think this will be mine, unless my daughter likes it so much she starts “borrowing” it. Then I will never see it again. lol. Happy crocheting to all! 🙂

  • Hi everyone! I’m Sue from Rochester, NY. This is my first CAL. I’ve recently “retired” and am looking for projects to keep myself busy and out of trouble. This looks like a fun one to do. Thanks for the suggestions about lower cost yarn — with less income, I’m definitely in the market for cheaper alternatives. I’m looking forward to doing this since, like many of you, my usual projects are things like afghans or scarfs. It’s been a long time since I dug into something more complicated. Thanks for the advice on yarns so far.

  • Hi,im from Ohio, this is my first CAL. Ive been crocheting for nine years know. Glad to see that the project I voted for was selected. Cotton Ease is great but I think I will be using Sugar and Cream Cotton,it works jus as good as Cotton Ease and its cheaper.

  • Hi! I’m Shara from Fayetteville, NC. Like so many of you, this is my first CAL. Last year I taught myself to crochet in September and knit in October. Since then I have been working on many different projects. I am hooked on yarncrafting and Lionbrand yarns! I’m looking forward to getting started.

  • Hi, this will be my first crochet-a-long too! Not so concerned about the yarn cost as I have a huge stash! I’ll start digging and see what I can find. I’ve been primarily a collector of yarn and just for a year or so a doer of projects. Lots of kid stuff as I have 3 grandsons and one on the way. Looking forward to joining all of you-all.

  • Hi, my name is Betty from San Jose, Calif. this is my first cal -i have crocheted for years but have never tried any garments because of the difficulty in the fit -but with the teachers help here i think i can do it . I will be substituting cheaper yarn too its too expensive and i have the coupon from Michael’s for today. I also love quilting, hand embroidery, and knitting.

  • Hey! My names Sasha and Im all the way from New Zealand! Although its coming up winter down here now Id still enjoy making this. Should be fun as Ive never done a CAL or made a garment before!

  • Hi, I’m Amy from Ohio. This is the pattern I voted on! I’m looking at yarn substitutions as well. I’m just finishing up the Inishturk KAL and then I’m ready to dive into this one. May use the Cotton Ease from amazon.com mentioned up-thread. Only concern is being able to get the same dye lot – anyone ever order yarn from Amazon before? I joined the group on ravelry – I’m AmyPC. Happy Hookin’!! 😉

  • My first CAL, but far from my first project! I’ve been crocheting again for a couple of years, after not touching it for decades. I’ve found it’s easier than quilting to carry in the car on long trips. 🙂

Regarding the yarn, I’m going to use the skeins – heaven knows how many – of Lily Sugar ‘n Cream in my stash. I know it’s “off-brand,” but it’s inexpensive, since I already have it lying around. (Actually, it’s pretty reasonably priced anyway – I think $1.79 US for 2 oz/57 g. – but I haven’t calculated the cost of buying enough for a single large project, so I don’t know if it makes sense in that regard.) I buy it for small projects, end up not using most of the skein, and they just sit, waiting for who knows what. I have a wide range of colors, solid and variegated, which will make for a colorful beach wrap – appropriate, for sure, since it’s for me!

The point is, if you crochet much at all, you may very well have some worsted-weight cotton somewhere. Look through your baskets and see what you can find – we’ll all trade pictures of our “Joseph’s coat” beach wraps when we’re done!

  • Hi my name is Robyn and I’m from WI. I have crocheted for many years and have made a variety of items, dresses, booties, blankets, afghans, sweaters, toys. I haven’t done anything for years and then got the bug again a few years ago. I have never done a CAL but when I saw this cover-up, I saw many uses and thought, why not. I’m looking forward to seeing if I can keep up and the experiences I’ll have.

Not sure if I have enought yarn in my stash or if I’ll have to go shopping.

  • Hello All. I’m Carolyn from Kirkland WA and this will be my first CAL. I crochet pretty much continuously and I am looking forward to this project.

  • Hi,I’m Carolyn from Chicago Ill,. This is my second CAL and I enjoyed working on the first one. My buget is Zero so I have to depend on what I have in my stash. Good crocheting everyone.

  • Hi! I think I’ll do this, as it looks like just the thing I would like to wear at the beach this year for vacation. Plus I’ve never done a crochet-along. It sounds like fuN!

  • I’m Cass from Annapolis, MD. First CAL for me too! I too expect to use this for a spring sweater rather than a beach coverup. As a 2x-3x, I’ve never found/made a crocheted garment that looked good on me. Whether fitted or baggy, both make me look huge. As a result, I’m mainly an afghan crocheter. But I’m going to try this, probably make it a bit shorter. I’m glad for the wide sleeves, I need them! I’m using an acrylic Category 4 weight gray heather yarn I caught on sale. I’ve checked the yardage so I know I have enough. Love Lion Brand yarns, especially Homespun, but have to go with a shop-brand affordable yarn this time. Plus I prefer a machine washable yarn. Looking forward to working this with a group and seeing everyone’s comments, questions and tips as it grows!!

  • Hi – Sandie from Dallas, TX. I’ve quilted, knitted, and crocheted for years; but never crocheted a garment….I’ve been thinking about making a sweater, so this sounds great. I like a softer cotton yarn – I’ve recently made a knitted market bag with Serenity Garden Yarn [Deborah Norville for Premier Yarns] in Earth tones. It’s actually Dralon Microfiber; but it has the feel of organic cotton. It’s in #2 fine – but it could be doubled? It has a soft hand, great drape, and easy on the hands. My experience with Lily cotton is that is has no “give”; also looks raggedy after a few washings. That’s too much work & expense to be unhappy with the results! I’ll be following along & am excited to join this, my 1st CAL.

Kendra says: A #2 fine doubled is more of a spore weight, not quite up to the worsted weight (#4) that the pattern calls for. As far as the Lily cotton, I have heard similar complaints. For those concerns, Lion Brand Cotton Ease might be a good option for you: the acrylic in it adds stretch and sheen and holds up great to washings!

  • Greetings all! This is fun seeing all of these normally solitary crocheters gathering together. I am dodging moose up here in Spokane, WA. Never done a CAL–do we have to all be here at the same time? Or do we check in like we’re doing here now? Also, I won’t be using the cotton yarn for several reasons: too spendy, don’t like the colors, too heavy when wet & never dries, especially when it’s humid. Also projects of cotton yarn may stretch badly out of shape, but it has no ‘give’ so my hands/wrists hurt too much to use it. Vanna’s Choice, or bamboo blends I’ll consider. Heathers tend to be softer for some reason, even the RH superscratchysaver!

Kendra says: Just check in like you are doing as you work at your own pace. I’ll have a new post every Thursday that you can refer to as you go and participate in the conversation 🙂

  • I like Sandy-in-WI’s suggestion about no hood. I’m a long-time crocheter, now living in the Sacramento CA area. I’m looking forward to my first CAL, too. This will be a nice distraction from the sucky economy! Speaking of the economy, I will be checking my stash for a replacement yarn, also.

  • I forgot to mention I taught myself to crochet when I was 5. Good thing too, since it keeps me outta trouble, except at my favorite yarn stores! As for substituting yarns, tricky business this. We’ll need to stay w/i class 4, note yardage per skein vs. yardage needed for size you plan to make. Bring your calculator to the store if you’re not going to wait for Kendra. I will be looking for a skein of the Nature’s Choice Organic Cotton to compare stretch, ‘weight’, ‘feel’ to yarns I’d like to work with. Some yarns are springier, have more loft, more stretch, even in same label 4 class. Then I will look for 1648 yds of my chosen yarn, however many skeins or balls that turns out to be. Plus one extra, all in the same dye lot. And ALWAYS, especially when altering things, make a 6″x6″ gauge swatch to see how your stitch and row count measures up. Easier to change hook size now, not after sleeves are too big. I don’t know about y’all, but I can’t WAIT to start this! yay!

  • Hi!
I’m Anne From Cincinnati. I work for the library. I have taught Crochet over the last 3 years. I have been part of a couple of mixed needlework groups and they are very good at helping over the hard parts. If you belong to that sort of group you might suggest this project to your whole group then you could have the best of both worlds: the web group and the live one to compare notes. I’m excited about the project but also share the concerns over the weight and price.

  • I’ve never participated in a crochet-a-long but this looks like fun. Would the Amazing yarn work? I’d like more than just a solid color.

Kendra says: Amazing would be a great option! Just be sure to check your gauge before you start.

  • Can’t wait to get started. I get to go buy more yarn…

  • I found Pound of Love® Yarn is a class 4 yarn and comes in 1020yd skeins at about $9.95 a skein. It wouls take less than 2 of them to do this pattern. How do you think that would work?
Vicki from Grove, Oklahoma(transplanted from Calhoun, Georgia.

Kendra says: Being a worsted weight, Pound of Love sounds like a good option. Just be sure to swatch and check your gauge!

  • Hi Again, I agree with Kristen. It is very tricky replacing yarns. It is not only about yardage per skein, but also about diameter of the yarn (or weight) for the gauge. I did what Kristen suggested yesterday. I took a skein of the Natures Choice Organic Cotton off the shelf and compared it to other yarns, and I have been comparing with my calculator for the yardage while reading the gauge of yarns from searching on-line. This yarn is very difficult to match. If the yarn is smaller in diameter, it requires more stitches (= more time) to make the project. I have decided to wait for Kendra’s suggestions. I hope she has some suggestions for a lighter weight yarns. The Natures Choice is very nice and soft, but quite heavy.

  • I am from San Marcos, Texas. I have a tendency to start sweater projects and never finish. I finish other projecst such as bags, hats, baby graments, blankets, etc. Not sweaters! I am going to commit to finshing this sweater.

  • I am so excited to make this cover-up. It’s the one I voted for. This will be my 1st CAL and my 1st piece of clothing. I am from Fort Worth, Texas, but living in Helena, Montana right now. I travel around the U.S. every few months to a new place for work…who knows where I will be when it’s finished! We are going to Puerto Rico next year, so I will at least be able to wear it there. I will be waiting for the less expensive yarn substitutions as well. Looking forward to “working” with everyone!

  • I have made a swatch to check my gauge with an I hook and Vannas Choice…. it was right on. I would recommend this as a reasonable substitute yarn. I am a few rows in and loving it! 🙂

  • I have never tried this “a long” idea. I hope I can keep up!!

  • Just had a look at the Vannas choice via the website and its not badly priced. Ill have to see if any local stores carry it or if Ill need to order it online.
Im going to need to make a few mods with the patter which should be fun as I am tall with monkey arms 🙂 haha, plus Im an in between size. But thats ok! Aaages untill Summer here haha

  • Hi Heather, With the Vanna’s Choice, did you use the total number of yards per skein to compute how many skeins you needed? Also, I have never used Vanna’s Choice, does it wash and wear well?

Kendra says: Yep, just figure out the number of yards for your size and divide that by the 170yds/ball of Vanna’s, which does wash and wear wonderfully!

  • Hello everyone, Sara from VA here. I am doing two of these for Mother’s Day presents. I too thought the suggested materials were way too expensive, so I looked at what weight the suggested yarn was and just substituted it with another yarn of the same weight. I picked Pound of Love. It is very economical and the color variety is great! I have started the project and seems very easy so far. 🙂 I did have to change hooks for gauge, I am using a K hook. Hopefully I can have both of these knocked out by Mother’s Day!

    Happy Crocheting!

  • I too have never done a crochet along, I have two grand daughters and have made them everything from full length sweater coats to 30 different hats with flowers. Crochet helps me calm down, I work with special ed high school kids, and they can be a challenge. This project will be my first crochet along and my very first item I will make for myself. I am going to use vanna white’s yarn and adjust for guage. I live in Arizona, but up in the mountains and it is still cold here, so I will wear it to work. Joan

  • Hi all, my name is Kcrystina and I live up in PEI, Canada. I’m going to be making this for myself as I desperately need a new one of these & will be so cool to tell people that I made it myself 🙂 Not sure which type of yarn I’ll be using for this yet. Do have a Michael’s gift certificate, so I probably will go shopping armed with that for the yarn there. 🙂 This will be my first crochet-along & looking forward to it!

  • Hi!
I’m Barb from Fresno, CA and this will be my first crochet along. I’ve been crocheting off and on since 5th grade. I’m looking forward to having a new sweater soon. 🙂

  • HI everyone!
My name is Jenn and I will be HOPEFULLY joining along as much as possible with this awesome project! 🙂

  • Thanks for all the helpful hints so far. I will be interested in seeing what suggestions are made for substituting yarn. I spent about 2 hours in AC Moore on Saturday (lots of yarn on sale plus a 15% off total purchase coupon) and was overwhelmed with trying to figure out what would work. I really want to use an acrylic for ease of washing, drying (I’m notoriously sloppy) so that added another dimension. I also had a hard time finding enough yarn of the same dye lot (I’m doing this in a 2X). This is a great thing being able to compare notes even before we begin. I did pick up some Caron Eco yarn on Saturday and I’m going to do a sample swatch to see how comparable it is. I’m already planning on using the larger hook because the yarn is thinner than the recommended organic cotton. Good luck everyone!

  • Hi All! I am from Mesquite, Texas. I am so looking forward to this project. This was my fave out of the selections for this time around. I have been crocheting for almost six years. In fact, when I started working for our local community ed program, I sat in on our crochet class because I had always wanted to learn. 🙂 [FYI: There are community ed programs all over the country; be sure to google for your local program. They have all sorts of great classes!] I have done all sorts of projects for other people and want to do something for myself this time. I have some beautiful chocolate brown/pink yarn that I am thinking I might use. I won it from a fiber/stitching show a couple of years ago. I might also use acylic yarn to make a version to keep at my office; it’s the coldest room in our building. Looking forward to working with everyone. Have a great week!

  • Hello All!

I am Rozy from Washington, DC and I am so excited to be joining my first CAL. I will get one of my sisters to join as well. I love this cardigan and I am looking forward to completing it. I downloaded this pattern not too long ago…COOL! I am so excited. Good luck all.

  • Hi everyone, my name is Becky and I love to crochet. I mostly work with #10 thread but also love the cotton yarns. I’ll be making this beach cardigan for my daughter who loves the beach. We live in San Antonio, Texas. I was taught to crochet at age 9 by my San Antonio Grandma and I’ve loved it ever since. Mary Beth, please let me know if crocheting this in acrylic yarn works. I’d love to make one for myself as well in a lovely pink yarn that I’ve been saving.

  • Hi all! This is Klara from Maryland (the Baltimore area). I am 28 and have been crocheting about 20 years believe it or not! I am working projects for myself into my hechtic schedule, so I am excited to try this pattern oout on myself. I think this will be a great alternative to a robe at the gym and a cute cover up for the summer. I just have to decide what color I want to make. going to the craft store at lunch time!

  • Thanks to everyone with substitute yarn suggestions. The cost of specialty yarns is what keeps me from participating in many of the “_ alongs” whether knit, crochet or quilting. Good to know that my family is not the only one struggling in these times and I don’t have to be embarrassed when I can’t afford to join these great community projects. Thanks again.

  • Hi! My name is Christine and I just found this today. I didn’t have time to check email over the Easter holiday. I wish I had, then I could have used my 30% off coupon at Michael’s. Oh well. I have 5 children (ages 6-15) and live in Brentwood (northern)CA. I have been crocheting for nearly 30 years and also do counted cross stitch and knit. The project looks interesting, but I need to do some yardage and cost calculations (I just bought some cross stitch fabric so my craft budget is close to nil). I will probably go with Vanna’s or Pound of Love (have worked with and enjoyed both), for many of the reasons already mentioned: cost, weight, dry-time. I love working with cotton and have made several tote bags and dish cloths, but I do find the bags heavy even when empty.

Hope to join you all on this cal. I’ve never done one before. I’ve yet to figure out how to keep up with online postings and stuff without it cutting into a lot of needlework time!

BTW, I noticed Betty Hechtman posted earlier. I’ve read her first 3 books (fun reads) and purchased number 4 a few weeks ago. Just trying to find time to read it!

  • Hi, my name is Brenda and I live in Chicago, IL. This will be my first crochet-a-long. I downloaded this pattern a long time ago, but never attempted to make it. My mother taught me how to crochet when I was about 10. I just recently started to crochet again and am loving it. I think this will be a fun thing!

  • My name is Kristin and this will be my first CAL and first sweater. I will working this in Vanna’s Choice Honey for myself. I’m a stay at home mom of two (they are one and two) so nap time is mom’s time. I have a couple of things that I need to finish first but I hope to jump into it soon.

  • This is also my first CAL-I’ve wanted to do them before but always have a zillion projects going. Just finished the latest afghan, so I figure I can finally try a garment. I too need the 3x version. I hope Kendra can help with that. Heading to Hobby Lobby this evening to get yarn. I appreciate all the suggestions. Can’t wait to get it going!

Kendra says: It’s a little out of the scope for me to resize the pattern, but you could try swatching with a larger hook to see how much that increases the size. Alternatively you could try increasing the number of stitches of the back panel by an increment of 2 (to maintain the pattern). Since it is meant to be worn open, you may not even need to adjust the front panels, but could as well by a multiple of 2. Hope this helps!

  • Hello to everyone, my name is Shannon. I live in Boyne City, MI (northern part of the state). I love to crochet and this CAL looks perfect. This is my first CAL although I have made crochet garmets before. I’ve been eyeing this one for a while. Can’t wait to get started. I also enjoy listening to Liz and Zonte’s podcasts!

  • Since several of you are familiar with Hobby Lobby, try their brand, “I Love This Cotton” Regular price is $2.99, however, they run it on sale frequently for $1.99, or use the coupons. It does not fade like some cotton and it is soft but still has body.

  • Hi fellow crocheters! This will be my first CAL. I’ve been crocheting forever, but have never done a CAL. My sister and I have just finished a KAL, and we plan to do this together too :-).
I live in Monroe, Oregon (in between Eugene and Corvallis). We have some shetland sheep, but we are still trying to get the hang of spinning before we start spinning our own sheeps wool.
I am thinking of using the cotton-ease for this project, but would like to see what will be a suggested alternative. I’ve use the cotton-ease before, and really like the feel of it. I’d also like to stick with a cotton yarn.
Can’t wait to get started :-)….It should be fun…I was wanting to do something with a hood…:-)

  • Hi I’m joyce from California, yes i felt the earthquake yesterday. I had motion sicks after it was done. no damage where we are at. thank God for that.
this is my first crochet along. i will be making this for myself, that could change. we will have to wait and see. this is my first clothing item that i will be making.
ok not sure what yarn i’m going to use. waiting to see what lions brand suggests. talk soon
    happy crocheting to all

  • I’ve been experimenting with some yarn from my stash and got the gauge I need using an I hook with both Vanna’s Choice (6 oz print) and Red Heart Super Saver acrylic.

Christine, I like Betty’s books also and #4 is as good as the first 3. Enjoy!

  • I can’t wait to start. I will be susbstituting because my budget currently does not allow for purchasing. Mine will be two toned.

  • I am going to try this, will be a good summer vacation project. What about substituting Lion Brand Rcycled Cotton? I tryed this for dishclothes and seems to work well. Plus I like the recycled concept.

Kendra says: Love it! That’s my personal favorite for a substitution for this cardi!

  • I’ve never done a CAL either and I’m one of you guys — I learned MANY years ago and now am back at trying it again. This looks like an awesome project and I’m glad to see so many of you being creative in what type of yarn you’re going to use.

I went to AC Moore last night — had a big 50% coupon — and compared many yarns. I figure I need more than 2 (14 oz) skeins, and I’ve got multiple 50% coupons. I’ll just stop off there every day after work and get another skein!!! Looks like it will cost me less than $15 ! ! ! If nothing else, it WILL be absorbent — LOL …

I decided to go with 100% cotton something like Handicrafters but it’s a different name — something like Cookies and Creme — LOL . . . I hope that’s suitable. Won’t be “stretchy” so I’ll see how that goes.

  • Hi,I am vickie from Huntsville AL.Have been knitting alot, just started crocheting again recently.Have only done small projects.Hope I can keep up. love this pattern.I bought yarn from hobby lobby called I Love This Yarn.Hope it does OK

  • Hi my name is Susan from Brampton,Ont. Canada and I look forward to my 1st CAL. I too am on a budget with being on disability. So I look forward to the suggestions that Kendra comes up with. I am so excited to finally make something for myself for a change. I usually knit so this is my 1st crochet pattern other than blankets.I hope I can keep up as well. It’s nice to know I’m not alone in budget and self esteem. ha ha

  • Namaste! Everyone
    I live in Bronx, NY.
This is my very first CAL and like many of you the yarn for this project is cost prohibitive. I am an avid crocheter since age 7y/o, I’m now sixty-something and have tons of yarn; I also know where all the discount yarn stores are in and around New York City that carry, “Lion Brand”!
I will be on the prowl…meantime I have begun with what I have on hand.

I so look forward to connecting with many of you.
    Enjoy!

Kendra says: If you can come by the studio (34 W 15th St), Vanna’s Choice Baby is 15% off all month, and has some fun bright colors for this cardi!

  • I just started crocheting three days ago, and this is listed as an intermediate pattern, so I may be way over my head, but I like the pattern too, and I am an accomplished and fearless knitter, so I think I will give it a try, especially since I already have suitable yarn in my stash, a fushia Lion Brand cotton worsted weight that I got on sale last fall that would make a bright bright bright cardigan!

  • Hi, everyone! This is Elizabeth in Milwaukee, WI. This will be my first piece of clothing, did only scarves, afghans, and other small things. I am looking forward to finishing this so I can show off my skills.

  • question? i have been looking for kendra to post the suggested yarn. i was wondering is there a special day of the week that the new post come out? thanks and happy crocheting

Zontee says: Hi Joyce, as it says above, Kendra’s first post is next Thursday. All the posts will come out on Thursday each week. If you’re new to our CALs/KALs, please click here to see a guide.

  • Hi, Joyce. I am also new to CAL, but I read that Kendra’s first post will be Thursday, April 8 – maybe that’s when the yarn recommendations will be out. I got some Auburn Pounds of Love hoping to keep up – much better knitter than crocheter – so happy to be here!

  • Oops! I posted with wrong email, sorry if this is here twice. I am new to CAL, but I think that Kendra’s first post is on Thursday, April 8 – maybe that’s when the yarn recommendations will be out? I will be using Auburn(love red) Pounds of Love hoping to keep up – much better knitter than crocheter – so happy to be here!

  • Hello everyone, this is my first CAL and I’m excited. I too am on a budget and so I’ll be using 100% worsted weight acrylic yarn. The cotton yarn is a little outside of my budget right now. This will be a summer project for a cruise cover up next year. Yay! The best to all.

  • Love, love, love this sweater. I want to make it for me this time. I rarely make things for me-usually some other family member or friend. Of course I could probably be talked into making others later…
I picked up a crochet hook and yarn at the age of 8 and haven’t stopped since. I have made so many different projects, you name it-I’ve made it, or gave it a good effort at worst. I can’t wait to give this a go!
I feel I am in good company…we all seem to need more budget friendly yarn choices!
    It’s all good!

  • thank you jackueline, i have been looking and couldn’t find anything that said when she would be posting.so thanks again have a great day

Zontee says: Hi Joyce, Kendra will be posting here on the Lion Brand Notebook (http://blog.lionbrand.com) on Thursdays.

  • Hello my name is Debbie O’Neill, I’m from Sound Beach, NY. This will be my first anything a long.:D It kind of scares me seeing the pattern called for 12 skeins. I’ve only made scarfs. Plus I hope to find this group again (it took me 4 days to find you all again 🙁 ) I guess that shows how new to all of this I am. I too am concerned about the cost, but I did see joann’s has 25% off all yarns till the 9th. Someone mention I think Cotton Ease, I hope Kendra says that’s a good one for this. Thanks for letting me get me fears out of the way.
    Hugs, Deb

Kendra says: Cotton-Ease is one that I recommend for sure! Just be sure to swatch and check your gauge. Welcome!

  • Hello! This looks like a fun way to connect with the crochet community at large. This will be my 1st CAL. I’ve read many of the posts and I appreciate the insights into this project… yarn choice, cost, etc.

I have two grandchildren and three grown children – all married. I usually crochet afghans, toys, hats, shawls and aprons as gifts for my family and friends. But, I plan to make the sweater for ME!

I am 53 years old and have been crocheting since taking lessons when I was 18. Recently, I’ve been designing my own projects and people have raved about them. I’ve always embraced patterns that are whimsical. My favorite crochet project from years ago was a plant hanger in the shape & colors of a turnip. What fun!

  • Hi! I’m joining. I’ll be using Cotton-Ease (in the color Berry) for this project since I have it in my stash.

  • Hi all! I did some comparison shopping for yarn and ended up with Bernat Satin for around $20 with 25percent off.I think it will work fine. I haven’t found time to start this yet so odds are I will quickly fall behind, but I’m sure going to try!

  • Hi to ALL!I returned my yarn to Hobby Lobby today. didn’t like it. But I did find cotton ease on enternet at JoAnn fabric on sale so ordered it in a summer blue[color of water]So wait for me,don’t get to far ahead! Vickie from Huntsville

  • Jacqueline in SoCal here. Should I have started crocheting already? I have my yarn and the pattern, but didn’t know if we are all going to “crochet along” with each other at the same time, which sounds totally awesome but maybe a little goofy since we are all in different places at different times….

Kendra says: It’s all at your own pace, but I’ll have information and tips along the way if you want to wait to see that information before getting started, including yarn substitutions and the “no-chain foundation” method for starting a crochet project. Welcome!

  • I want to do this CAL, but since I am a LARGE happy person, none of them fit correctly. The problems is the upper sleeve and the seam area under the arms–all are just not right!

I haven’t found a pattern that will work and I don’t want to use the money/yarn/time to make one that won’t fit.

  • Hey my name is Ginger and i am from Gainesville, Florida. I am very excited to start this CAL. Have my yarn and hook Ready!

  • Hi, my name is Evie and I live in Rhinelander, WI. I’ve always wanted to learn how to crochet sweaters since I was a teenager so am excited about this project. I’m in my late 40’s and since the last year and a half have had more time to crochet. I’m not secure enough in my work to try to substitute so I did buy the suggested yarn. It was on sale on the Herrschner’s web site. The yarn came today, just in time!

  • I am Linda and live in Olympia, Washington. I just printed this pattern out last week cause I was going to make it for me and now I see this CAL – which sounds fun to do. I used to crochet when my kids were little. Started up when my daughter got pregnant with her first baby in 2007 so I have been crocheting baby blankets for three years, scarfs, hats and I knitted 25 pairs of slippers one Christmas for the family. So now I thought I make something for me and I am thinking that I might want enter something in the Puyallup Fair this year, depends on how it turns out. I bought a different kind of cotton yarn because of the cost of the organic cotton but it should work. Looking forward to starting up with all of you. 🙂

  • Hi, I am Linda from Pittsburgh PA and this will be my first crochet-along. I have had this pattern printed out and in my crochet file for a LONG time, so now I am looking forward to actually doing it! Planning a trip to Joann’s this week to look around for suitable yarn…would love to use cotton but I will have to see. Anyone know how many yards are in the recommended yarn so I can make calculations?

Zontee says: Hi Linda, see this FAQ about substituting yarn to learn how to calculate yardage.

  • thanks kendra and zontee for your help. i’m new to this web page and to this crochet along. i have done a knit a long over the winter on a different web site. i just have to get to know the web page and where things are at. so thanks again. happy crocheting.

  • Hello everyone! Ann in sunny SoCal. Haven’t decided on which yarn to use. Was at JoAnn’s today and the Vanna’s Choice is on sale 2/$5….for all of you considering that yarn. I’m excited to try this CAL. Sounds like fun. I’ve never made a garment before and am a bit nervous about fit, but sounds like we’ll be getting help and support. Let’s have some fun ladies!!

  • Hi, I’ve been wanting to KNIT a beach cover-up.
Can you suggest a knitting pattern for one?

    Julie from Boone NC

Zontee says: Hi Julie, why not check out this knit kimono. The yarn it’s show in is discontinued, but it would do well in a cotton (you can work a worsted-weight on a bigger needle to get gauge) or in Incredible ribbon yarn, which is the same gauge as the recommended yarn. Keep the trim or leave it off–up to you. Hope that helps!

  • It’s me again, so excited to discover 12 skeins of natural colored Pima Tencel by Cascade Yarns in my stash!! do you think this is a good choice? it is worsted weight and I have enough, just have to get the gauge right.

  • Thanks so much to everyone in this blog. I learned that the JoAnn’s yarn sale ends 4/9, and that Kendra said cotton-ease will work. I’m so excited. I’m going to JoAnn’s tomorrow. Hope I can get the yarn in Almond. 😀

  • Hi, I am Nora in WI and I just learned to crochet a couple of moths ago. I love this sweater though, so I am joining this CAL and going to give it my best shot! 🙂

  • Hello everyone! I’m looking forward to Kendra’s post tomorrow, especially the part about a no chain foundation. That’s new to me and I may give it a try. I still haven’t decided which yarn to use so I’m also interested in her substitution suggestions. I’m hoping to actually start working on this over the weekend. 🙂

Zontee says: Hi Barb, just FYI, Kendra’s not going over the no-chain foundation until her second post.

  • Hi, I’, Dawn from North Florida. I am looking forward to my first CAL. I never seem to get around to making anything for myself, so this will be fun.

  • I am so excited to do this cal….this will be my first. My goal is to have it done in time for camping season. Looks like nice sweater for cool nights and mornings.

  • […] Announcing Our Spring 2010 Crochet-Along! […]

  • I am interested in doing this but am a left handed crocheter. From what I can tell, that means I work from the opposite direction from a right handed person. Do I need to adapt the pattern then….and if so, how?

Zontee says: Hi Barb, it shouldn’t matter, since the overall garment is symmetrical. You might have to follow the “left front” directions for the right and vice versa, but you’ll end up with all the parts.

Kendra says: I’m left-handed! It works out just fine 🙂 I’m just working it right-handed to ease any confusion, but feel free to ask if you encounter any lefty issues.

  • This looks like fun!!
Is there any way to make this shorter? I’m only 5 foot 3.

Zontee says: Hi Mila, click here to see our Facebook album of various people in the office trying on the cardi. Two of the girls are about your height, and the cardi looks fine on them. Otherwise, if you want to make them shorter, just don’t make the pieces as long! Since this is one of those projects where you work even until you have a certain length, you can just pick a shorter length to work until.

  • When Kendra writes about yarns today, is it posted on this thread or do I go somewhere else to read her suggestions and instructions.
Can you tell I’m new! 😀
    thanks, Deb

Jess Says: Hi, Deb. Kendra made a separate blog post. Just go to http://blog.lionbrand.com to see the latest posts.

  • Does it make a difference if you buy the cotton yarn from a cone or skein?
I see there are cotton cones that hold about 805 yards…
    thanks in advance!
    deb

Jess Says: Hi, Deb. It doesn’t matter if the yarn comes in a cone or ball. Some yarns come in large cones to assist with machine knitting, but there’s no reason you can’t hand-crochet or knit with them.

  • Awww. Just went to my lys and the dont stock Lion Brand! Im hoping the store I go to in the city has some, else I may have to order online which will take aaaaaages 🙁

  • I’m enthused, too…I only saw one post about recycling an old sweater. This was my first thought when I saw the project…I have a sweater I made about 6 years ago. Still LOVE the yarn, but could I take it apart and remake it in this updated pattern?

  • YAY! I’ve been wanting to join a crochet-along. And I’ve been wanting to crochet this pattern for a few years now. It’s been in my “to do” pile for some time. But the organic cotton is way out of my price range. I found a fun color of big balls of Bernat Handicrafter cotton. While it’s not my first choice of yarn, I made a shrug with this stuff last year and I’ve worn it non-stop for the past 2 weeks. It’s soooooooo soft and comfy now. Hoping that I have the same good crocheting Karma with this project. Ordered my yarn this morning. Can’t wait for the yarn to arrive to get started.

  • How is everyone doing? It took me a minute to figure out that I had to click on Kendra’s link (on post #171 above) to get to her directions. I’m obviously not a blogger, lol. I hope everyone finds the way to her blog page.

  • I’m so excited for this CAL! I did the one last year with Stephanie Japel and the circle shrug and loved it. I also choose to use the cotton-ease as it is in my price range. Thanks for doing this! I am making this for myself.

  • This is my first crochet-a-long, and I hope I can keep up. Life is hectic and illnesses interrupt all the time. I think I’m going to use cotton-ease yarn, also. As long as it can be machine washed and dried, it’s a go! But, since this item is for me and another one for my daughter, I will probably shop on the web to obtain some inticing colors not included in the stores. How does this work…do we just start crocheting?

  • Hi Agnes, click on: Kendras post #171 above Beach Cardi Crochet-Along: Let’s Get Going! | Lion Brand Notebook to get to her first blog page. In the last paragraph their is a link to the no-chain foundation. Have fun!

  • I would love to do this! can’t wait to get started, 🙂

  • Jacqueline from SoCal here. Learned a hard lesson about gauge swatches: I was so excited I went ahead and started the project, but it wasn’t until I had the fronts attached and joined at the shoulders that I discovered the measurements were all incorrect!!! (too small) I had assumed that since the rows were correct, the hdc’s were also, but not true 🙁 . I’ve started over with a better yarn, and made a swatch, and yay, will adjust a little for length but hdc’s are right on. Hope this will help one person. 🙂

  • I have a really basic question – Is there a simple way to find the yarn end when starting with a new skein that feeds from inside the center of the skein? Sometimes I find it easily and sometimes I end up with a tangled mess….

Zontee says: Hi Louise, in fact we have an FAQ about it in the LionBrand.com Learning Center, where you can find answers to many common questions. Click here to read it.

  • A so excited to be doing something more than an afghan, slippers or hats! I too have chosen a more affordable brand of yarn and have started already. I am pleased to say I am happy with the results of what I have done so far!

  • I am ready and excited. This is my first CAL, hopefully I will be able to keep up and stay on schedule. This should really be great. Can’t wait to see the finished project. I decided to use two colors of yarn, now have to decide the best way to incorportate both colors.

  • I am truly excite to participate in the Spring 2010 Crochet-Along. This is my first CAL. I have crochet other items, but this is my first time crocheting a beach cover-up/cardigan. It should be fun crocheting with other people. I hope I can keep up with everyone. I am looking forward to see the finished project.

  • Hi everyone! I guess better late than never! My name is Jenna and I’m from Maryland. I love to crochet. I mostly make blankets and I’ve recently started making stuffed animals. This is my first time making a type of cardigan. I think this will be fun! happy crocheting!!!

  • […] Announcing Our Spring 2010 Crochet-Along! […]

  • Hello everyone, I got my yarn and ready to go. I love to crochet & I’ve been crocheting for a while but my first time with CAL.

I have one question, does this Beach Cardi have a length? I am 5’1″ and I have noticed that a few things I’ve made was always too long for me. Is there an adjustment for length?

Thank you and I’ll be hitting the needle tomorrow.

Zontee says: Hi Bennette and welcome! If you look at the pattern, you will see that it tells you to work the two front pieces and the back piece until you have a certain length. If you want to make it shorter, just use a smaller measurement for that length (maybe 3 to 5 inches less, depending on where you want it to hit your body).

  • […] Announcing Our Spring 2010 Crochet-Along! […]

  • Hello, I am excited about CAL, but have we started this sweater yet? I’m not sure how to keep up: through email or just reading the blogs, I’m not sure, please help.

Zontee says: Hi Cheryl, sorry for the confusion. We’re currently on the 6th week of working on the sweater. There are directions for following the new blog posts in the above post.

  • Thank you for setting this out, you have helped a lot of us distressed with the corresponding problem. The route to dryness is not an easy one to take. But with a tremendous dose of dedication, aid from a total treatment and a lot of support from a loved one, the path away from alcohol addiction becomes easier the further you go along.
