A Guide to KALs/CALs

How do I join the crochet-along (CAL) or knit-along (KAL)?
Just download the pattern, pick up your supplies either at your local store or on our website, and start knitting! No need to sign up or anything. Just read the posts and share your thoughts with other participants.

How often will you update?
Generally, we will post once a week, but you can crochet or knit at your own pace! The posts will STAY on the blog, so you can always come back.

How do I share my thoughts or questions?
As you're working, share your questions with other crafters by adding a comment (click on the “comments” button at the bottom of each post), and if you have an answer for someone else, a suggestion, or just an anecdote, share it with us, too! If you’re responding to someone else's comment, it’s helpful to include their name and/or comment number, so we know what you’re referring to.

Please read others' comments! Someone might have already asked/answered the question you have, or maybe you can answer someone else's question. It’s all about helping each other!

And of course, before you comment, please read our Rules of Engagement -- the blog is a safe, positive space for yarncrafters to share their thoughts. Please help us keep it that way.

How do I share photos of my progress?
If you have a blog or an account on a photo service, feel free to store your pictures there and just include a link to your photos in a comment. If you are a Flickr user, tag your photos "lion brand" and the name of the pattern, then join the Flickr pool! Flickr has a great explanation of how to add your photo to a photo pool. (Note: all links appear in orange on the Lion Brand Notebook, so if something is orange, you can click on it!)

You can also use the built-in photo tool in the comment box. Just click on the + (plus) symbol and upload a photo from your computer. Please note that if the image file is very large, it may not upload.

Can I invite my crocheting or knitting group to join?
Absolutely! CALs and KALs are all about building community. Feel free to invite your friends. If you have a blog, save the CAL/KAL badge we will provide (Right-click the badge and “Save image as” to save it to your computer — Ctrl+click and “Save image as” on Macs) and add it to your blog, so that your friends can see it, too.

What's the most important part of the CAL/KAL experience?
For some people, the projects will be relatively easy, and we hope that they share their expertise. For others, it's about the challenge and pushing through the difficult parts for a really wonderful end result. But in the end, it's important to remember to just have fun, learn, and make new friends! CALs/KALs are all about pushing your boundaries, trusting in yourself and the community, and having a good time.

This will be my first joining the knit along. I have recently gotten back into knitting and crocheting and am having a blast! Thanks so much for doing this! I look forward to participating!

This will be my first knit-along. I've been knitting for 40 years and it is a real passion for me. I like to knit things for my grandsons as well as to sell at craft fairs. A couple of years ago, I did hats for a shop in NYC. I have been a test knitter for my LYS and am currently doing the same for a shop in NC.

I have been in many KALs and CALs on Ravelry and love them all...great fun! This shrug looks wonderful and the designs in the book are lovely, it is great to see patterns beyond the basics and feminine.

I'm not too keen on the shrug but I've been knitting for 60 years and enjoy new challenges. The KAL sounds like fun! Am I allowed to sell the shrug when I finish it?

Okay, I'm going to give it a try. I took a long break from knitting but am trying to get back into it. I did a really simple blanket, got the pattern off this site, for my parents for Christmas and they LOVED it! I'm working on a cable blanket for my daughter, again, pattern off this site (there are so many great ones!), but I think I need to take a break and make something for me! I'm excited to pick out yarn this weekend, and expect to see me posting lots of questions, I know I'll have them!

This is my first KAL. Have been looking to try a shrug pattern but couldn't find a pattern I've liked. Just printed this one out and I think I can do this. Was wondering if I could substitute the yarn? I might not be able to find this yarn in my local store - haven't seen it there the last time I was there anyways. Anyone else substituting yarns?

Yes, you can substitute yarns. Wool-Ease (easy-care), Cotton-Ease (good for warm weather), and Vanna's Choice (very affordable) are all good alternatives for this project. I have never joined the kal before and would like to. I see all the comments from other knitters but do not know which pattern they are talking about.

    Thanks!

  • Beverly Malloy

I've been knitting and crocheting since I was 6 and fell I got the best of both worlds. My mom had to have a pattern and taught me how to read one and my grandmother couldn't or wouldn't read one, but hand her a finished item and she could duplicate it. I learned how to create both ways. I also worked for nearly 15 years for a local designer who designed and sold hand knitted and crocheted jackets. She later branched out into hand finishing hand woven machine knits. Knitting is my hobby and my therapy.

    Hi Everyone!
This is the very first KAL group I've joined. The shrug is a beauty. I love the fact that it is form fitting. I've been knitting off and on for about 40 years, but have been knitting regularly for the grandkids the last few years. I rarely make anything for me, so this is it! I just hope I can keep to gauge and it fits properly.
Like Kristine, I am not sure what pattern the conversations are about sometimes, but hopefully we are all talking about the circle shrug this time. Good luck everyone. I look forward to reading your comments as we travel through our project together.

    HI there

I am really excited about getting involved in a knit-along. I am in South Africa, so before I go out and buy supplies, can anyone tell me if I can substitute the yarn in the pattern for any double-knit yarn? If I had to order on line it would take a millenium to get to me and I would like to cast on tonight

  • Rhonda Reynolds

Very flattering lines, I think I have to do make this shrug.

  • Lisa

Just downloaded the pattern and ordered the yarn. Never participated in KAL. Can't wait to start.

  • Myrna Rochelle

This is my first time on KAL. I am looking forward to the experience since I live in the country and none of my friends knit. I have recently taken knitting back up as one of my retirement "dos"!

  • Heather Dean

This is my first time working a KAL and the Textured Shrug Pattern is beautiful. I'm very excited.

  • Myrna

This will be my first knit-along. I love the shrug. It is beautiful. I also have trouble with gauge and will check out the suggestion in the blog. I am also concerned about the sleeves. Being a swimmer, I also have large arms. Thanks.

  • http://www.photographybydallas.net Dallas

    Starting mine tonight.

Will we see pictures of anyones progress?

This is my first knit along.

  • penny

I am very excited about joining this group. I have been knitting for years but still refer to myself as a beginner so this will be a challenge for me.

  • http://iserv.com phyllis

am too old for the shrug, but I think my 20 year old granddaughter will love it.. am a slow knitter tho I have been knitting for years, arthritis of the hands but knitting helps.so am going to try it..

  • Coleen Wakai

What a unique pattern; I just love the detail. I look forward to participating and networking with everyone.

  • Faye Rotunda

I can't wait, I have tried to teach myself to knit( as I usually crochet since 8yrs old) but couldn't. Friends have tried to teach me but I couldn't get it. I went to a class at A C Moore and still couldn't. I went to a class at a public school at nite and had the most wonderful teacher and met a great group of knitters whom I still meet with every two weeks at B&N. I am going to try this. It's my first KAL and I am 64 years young. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to have all these new friends to help me through.

    Toodles!
    Faye

  • Dana

This will be my first knit along and I'm very excited to try this pattern. My grandmother taught me to knit when I was very young and I just recently picked it up again. This project is going to be my first "big" challenge since picking up the needles again!

  • Selma

My first KAL, just in time for hip replacement recovery! This shrug looks a lot like one I wanted a pattern for but couldn't afford the whole book + postage. Thanks!

  • Linda

This is my third KAL. I ordered the yarn already and can't wait to start.

  • Marcy

    Howdy, y'all!

Wow! I wish I could look like that wearing the shrug! But I've wanted one for a while, so I simply must KAL! WooHOO! I've just discovered this site. Sounds like a lot of fun. BTW, I love crochet, too.

  • Caroline

My sister and I are going to both be working on these from different countries - the pattern looks beautiful, will try to find some appropriate yarn in my overwhelming stash! Good motivator!

  • California Annie

My first KAL... I'm very excited to try this out. I'll be making it in a larger size but short waisted so I'm sure I'll be needing help. Looking forward to your insights and combined wealth of knowledge.

  • Anna

Definitely my next big project. I've been doing baby clothes for preemie babies & for babies at our church. Haven't done anything for moi for ages so I'm due to have something special for me. Anna (Sydney)

  • Projects Galore

This is my first KAL and am excited to join as I complete knitting projects but my downfall is finishing them-- you know the sewing and blocking. This will be a great motivator for me.

My skill level is intermediate and I plan to use a cotton yarn.

  • Rita

My first KAL and am going to send the link to my daughter who also loves to knit. I have made several things but nothing too complicated and am looking forward to trying this shrug. It will be perfect for the office. Thanks

  • waylin chu

I am a experienced knitter, and some experience in crochet, living in Brea california, near Anaheim, was there any crafter group that I can join?

  • Jennifer Allen

A new experience for me. I am looking forward to it.

  • DEENA

THIS will be my first knit along as well....I've been knitting off and on for a couple of years. Due to diabetic neuropathy w/carpel tunnel, I take a long time to finish projects, but I will finish them...I've completed several baby blankets, kerchief for the head, a knitting bag, scarves, cel phone holder, and currently working on a beanie for my hubby! Looking forward to the shrug knit along!

  • Sue G.

My first KAL. I'm going to give it a try. My knitting is a little rusty so maybe this will give me the boost I need to get going.

  • Bettyann M

This will be my first knit along. I am excited to try a project with a group and I am hoping it will help me to learn more about knitting and give me the opportunity to try new things.

  • Janet Wilson

Hi I have been crocheting & knitting for 40 years, and lately not very sucessful. This shrug has grabbed my interest, I'm excited about getting into this design. This would be my first knitted shrug, I always crochet them. This looks like a project I can finish with success and can make a nice gift.

  • Paula Bauch

This is a wonderful idea. I will be looking forward to participating in a future project. I am much to tall and ultra long legged to wear this cute little shrug. I receive your e-newsletter and read everything in it, so it is just a matter of time before I join in on the fun.

  • http://yahoo Sherry Perry

This sounds like a lot of fun. I have been knitting off and on for about 50 years. I will enjhe knit along! I live in a small rural farming community and will appreciate sharing with other knitters.

  • Marylin

I have been knitting since I was 8 years old. this is the frist time that I have joined a kal or a cal. I have been knitting and crocheting for the premies here in Phoenix. I love making doll and baby clothes.

  • Amber

This will be my first KAL. I've been knitting for 47 years and am an advanced knitter. I own Knitting Knight in Hibbing MN, and am going to get my knitting group to join in the fun.

  • Catherine Githengu

I have knitted for the 19 years and hope to enjoy the kal. I'm from Kenya and will probably not find the recommended wool but will work with what i can find.

  • Mary Lou Shannon

This sounds like fun. I need something creative to do to get my mine off problems. It will be a first for me. Thanks.

  • Kat

My name is Kat. I am from CA and I am an advanced beginner, whatever that means! LOL. So, wish me luck!

  • Cakelady Chris

Never blogged before--but love to knit and crochet. I work at Curves and we have our own "Busy Fingers" group that makes chemo hats, preemie hats, adult slippers and lap robes for our local needy. We also make burial gowns/buntings for Angel Babies who did not stay in our world for long. I look forward to trying some new things we can make and share.....

  • Nancy Smithyman

This will be fun. It's my first KAL. None of my friends knit, so now I won't be lonely anymore.

    Nancy

  • http://traceystreasures@zoomshare.com Tracey

Thank you for a knit-a-long! I participated in the crocet-a-long last month. It was GREAT!!!! This time I will be paticipating and sharing the item for my family member with stage four cancer. I think the time making it while sharing time with her, will be a relaxing time for the both of us.

I really enjoy your web site and blogs. Keep up the good work!

  • Margaret

I just started this for my daughter and can't believe I had to research reverse stitch...I've been knitting for 45 years! Guess there's still more to learn even at my age!

  • Karen Cavanaugh

    Sounds like fun. Let's go

  • Ann Fishman

    Hello,
I have never done this before, am a total dunce with computer technology but this is too exciting to pass up..
Can't wait to learn how to knit on circular needles and to make this adorable shrug.
    Ann

  • Barbara Tracey

In response to Margaret in post 88. My grandmother taught me to knit when I was 10 years old, and I'm now older than she was then, and when I started this shrug I couldn't figure out what KFB meant. When I finally realized it was an increase row the lightbulb went off, but after all these years you'd think I'd recognize the abbreviations so I know how you feel. It was good for a chuckle.

This is my first KAL and I'm enjoying the experience.

  • Viola

I am joining this KAL, too. It looks like a very interesting pattern and I can't wait to start. When do we start?

What is the best way to follow the CAL. I had a hard time last time. Will it be on Facebook?

Zontee says: Hi Beth, the best way to follow the CAL is to come back every Thursday for the new CAL post on the Lion Brand Notebook official blog at http://blog.lionbrand.com -- it won't be on Facebook, but we will have groups on Ravelry and Flickr that you can also join.. Once you're there, you can also sort by only CAL-related posts by clicking "crochet-along" under the Categories in the right-hand bar. Hope that helps!

  • Indy

I have been looking for a lacy (looks like about 3 single in chain) headband pattern... picked up one in Mexico about 22" long, 4" in the middle tappering to 1" at both ends... I crocheted about 40 years ago and would like to try again...

  • xoop

I am a beginner knitter and I have knitted a dozen of those ruffle scarves now I want to knit a cozy warmer with circular needles. I have also knitted one of those as well but the problem is that I have not joined the yarn to continue the knitting if you understand what I mean. How do you that? I look forwad hearing from you. Xooop

  • Linda

Is this only a KAL? I thought there was a choice for CAL too?
I don't knit, but would like to try a CAL challenge if possible.
I'm a beginner and would me most comfortable doing the
    Modern Granny Scarf project.

  • amethyst

Hi! I am really interested in trying the Glamour Jacket, but I would love this in the Sapphire and Lapis, but saw no kit for those shades. Does anyone else think that would be a good combination? I love the blue/green combination, even tho purple is MY favorite color forever....I would love to try this for my daughter! I'm sure she would appreciate something other than a poncho! lol. Any comments?

  • Betty

I don't crochet but I would like to join in and practice! just love the pattern!
