If you’re planning to head to the sand & sun this summer (and we hope you are!), then check out these 8 patterns. Maximize your summertime fun with crafting ideas to work up for the beach! From sunhats, to beach blankets, to totes, and more, we’re throwing a beach party, and you’re all invited.
One of the most important things to consider when you head out for a day of fun, is sun protection! In addition to slathering on the SPF (don’t forget to reapply!), you might want to consider a handmade sunhat. With more style than a baseball cap, and more coverage, it’s a surprisingly practical project.
The Cotton Sun Hat (Knit) is a very sensible sunshade. The pattern suggests a yarn that has long been discontinued, but we’d recommend a couple other CYC 4 Weight yarns: choose Kitchen Cotton or 24/7 Cotton for extremely easy care, and many fun color options.
Our Destin Beach Sun Hat (Crochet) is another 24/7 Cotton project, and we’d encourage you to go crazy with color! You could choose a neutral, or match to your favorite swimsuit, or go for a pop of color that will look smart in selfies. With such a cute option, you won’t regret topping your beach party look off with a hat, and protecting your skin at the same time.
The coverup game has gotten much cuter in the last few years, and we’ve got a couple adorable patterns if you want to craft your own! Take your beach party to the next level with a stylish tunic, robe, or wrap. From our summer style collection, the Orient Beach Tunic (Crochet Kit) includes all your favorite summer hues. With a few balls of Shawl in a Ball, you’ll benefit from the color-striping yarn by achieving a project that looks so much more complicated. If you’re more comfortable with color-work, then the Arverne Beach Robe (Crochet Kit) is a perfect project for you. It’s so fetching, easy to throw on, and very easy to care for, because it’s made of Jeans.
The Audrey Tote (Crochet Kit) is the perfect bag to take all your gear to the beach. It’s got depth and space for your snacks, beverages, toys, and beach reads, and sturdy handles for transport. Whatever you’re matching to, whether it’s your suit or your beach blanket, you can’t go wrong with black & white.
This tote uses our Fast Track Yarn, which is super-bulky and sturdy enough for a bag of this size. Because of its size and flat shape, it’ll work up quickly, too.
For a trendier option, you’ll love the Wooden Handle Tote (Knit). This throwback style is surprisingly ‘now’, especially with boho details like the sweet fringed ties. This pattern comes from ‘Knit or Crochet: Have it Your Way’ by Margaret Hubert, and we’re smitten! This is another project that calls for a discontinued yarn, so we’d recommend a couple other CYC 4 Weight yarns instead: Kitchen Cotton or 24/7 Cotton. We love to substitute one equally cottony yarn for another, to guarantee ease of care and durability.

Of course, a beach day wouldn’t be complete without a wonderful throw. We’ve chosen two of our favorites, one bright and one subdued, to set the mood for your day in the sun. The first, our Camel Rock Ripple Afghan (Crochet Kit), has all your favorite summer colors in fun-loving zig-zagging stripes. It’s also made with sensible 24/7 Cotton, so it’ll travel well, wash well, and hold up to plenty of use on all your adventures. For something a little more subdued, our Valdez Afghan (Knit) features all the beauty of the nature around you – the blue of the water, the taupe of the sand. It’s made with one of our newest yarns, Flikka, and you’ll love the depth of each of the colorways used for this relaxing throw.
Whatever gear you need to get your beach day going, we hope we’ve offered some stylish options to consider! Just because the weather’s warmed up, doesn’t mean you have to cast aside your crafting til the fall. As a bonus, many of these projects are actually easy enough to work on at the beach, so you’ll have a fun activity while you lounge.
