A Teeny Tiny Spoolie Necklace Pouch for Teeny Tiny Treasures

I have always loved wooden dolls.
And, a few decades ago,
I happily married a wonderful man who
happens to be a Lathemeister,
and
best of all is
an incredibly patient man....
and a very creative one....
and we really enjoy
co-creating things
together........
Including
wheeeeeeee heeeeeee
wooden dolls.
So,
I asked Jim to please turn some teeny tiny wooden dollies
for me to draw on, burn and paint.
He did.
I was tickled pink,
but got overwhelmed by deadlines,
this, that and the other,
and the wee wooden dollies
languished in my dollhouse.

On one of my favorite email user lists,
there was a discussion
about Baba Yaga
and Vasilisa.

Who's that?
asked a friend.......
Ah!
the Russian version of  Cinderella,
who was given a wonderful little dolly
by her mamma.
The dolly lived in Vasilisa's  pocket and
guided
her through many an
adventure.

This triggered the memory of the
tiny wooden 'pocket dolls',
abandoned, faceless, sad and lonely,
in the dollhouse!

Good heavens!
This will never do!
And, so,
after their long 'gestation',
they finally got to take wing.

Out of the dollhouse they came,
and they now have faces and wings
and hearts and hands
and teeny tiny personalities........
the embodiment of whimsy!

and
I was so excited that I immediately
started hopping up and down and
begged Jim to turn me some more!
He did.
While he was at it,
I was thinking.......
what if I didnt' have a pocket?
I would need to carry
my wee wooden whimsy doll
over my heart.

What better way,
than to spoolknit
a teeny tiny pouch
for a teeny tiny doll!

And, I figured that most everyone
has
~something~
small  that they treasure,
and need to carry over their heart......
so I should share the teeny tiny spoolie pouch on my blog!

As is so often the way, when designing,
I ended up making the pouch and 'frogging' it
about 6 times before I was happy with it.

I used my 7 peg Mighty Mamma spoolie,
and 2 strands of Lion Brand Incredible ribbon yarn
for the body of the pouch

I took this picture during one of the earlier versions of the pouch,
when I was working with just one strand.
2 strands worked better.
Anyhow...
I did 5 rounds on 7 pegs.

then, I picked up a stitch with my crochet hook and chained one.
(If you don't crochet, it just means that you take the yarn over the hook
and through the loop on the hook)
Then, I picked up the next stitch, and passed the loop on the hook over it.
I cast off 5 stitches this way and chained one between each of the cast off stitches.

when I had 2 stitches, I spool knitted them for about a yard,
for the cord.

I attached it to the other side of the  open edge at the top of the pouch.
I gathered the lower edge and stitched on a couple of beads,
and
Voila!
a teeny tiny pouch for
my
wee wooden whimsy doll!
(It would also work well for lip gloss
or something small that you treasure).
Actually, it looks very nice empty.
You could quest for something dreamy to put in it!

Happy Spooling and Happy Springtime!
hugs all round

It's the First Day of Spring (and 3 little bears)

First Day of Spring
and 3 little bears

by Noreen Crone-Findlay (c) 2006

The calendar announces that it is the first day of spring....
BUT!
when I look out the window,
it's deep mid winter!
And, the only one who likes it is
Ms CorgiBossDog

Snow is good.
It means that we won't have a drought....
but
ohhhhhhhhhhhhh
where oh where is Springtime?

The other day,
the phone rang.
It was my brother.
"I'll be at your house in 8 minutes."
Alrighty......
and there he was
in 8 minutes
or so........
bearing gifts.
Pictures he had taken of Mom and her three bears
in their chairs......
(the 3 Memory bears I had made her
in their little chairs)

That's my Dad next to them

and in one of the pics,
there's a snap of me and my older sibs
(Muuuuuuuuuuuuch older!
cackle cackle! )
So, it's kind of like a pic of Mom
and
her three bears
and
her three bears
(4th bear didn't make it into the pic).....

She says she doesn't really look like that,
that really,
she's still young and beautiful.

I say,
"Mom, you've earned the wrinkles.
Glad you're here to sport them.
Stick around, Momsie!
The fun is just beginning!
"

if the nasserfratszing snow would just go away...

Happy Springtime everyone!
hugs all round
and may
springtime bloom in your heart
with it's infinite
possibilities
: o )

The new old chair is finally finished

March 12, 2006

Wheeeeeeeee! The New old Chair  is finished!
by Noreen Crone-Findlay (c) 2006

Waaaaaaaaaaay back in the autumn,
Spoolie was a busy little bunny,
spooling up a mile or two of cord....
and has it ever come in handy!

This is the fabric that I have used to ~finally~
finish  the dear old chair that we adopted from the second hand store.
And yes, the fabic's still on the loom in this pic.

Last time, I had just started draping the chair with the fabric,
and Jim had made a new 'keel' for it....

He got it glued and screwed and pegged and plugged into
the undercarriage of the chair

and I got pinning and pulling, and tugging
and oofing with the fabric

and stitching....

and Ms Minou supervised the progress of 'her' chair:

As is the way with most things around our house,
a little spool knitting was required

She inspects....

and approves.

So, I stitched it over the seams....

and put it all back together again.....
and it is an incredibly comfie chair!

It does have a little
~ahem~
"cellulite"
around the edges,

but then,

who doesn't?

So, now, I am working on weaving panels,
and spooling cords for a coverlet for it.

By the way,

the other day,

Jim went out to do errands
and  phoned home.

From the second hand store.
.........oh oh..........

'There's a great old slipper chair here for only $5!
.........
should I get it?'

..........um.........
OF COURSE!

and, oh, yes...... it needs a little work.......

But, that's another story!

hugs all round,
and happy spoolknitting!

Ps: Do I ever get to sit in the new old chair?
of course not.
It's occupied.
