Weaving Spoolie Cords to Make a Chair Cushion or even a rug.....

The other morning, Jim went out to feed the horses.
if you look closely at the pic on the left,
you will see a dear old old old pony that we take care of.
(He looks like Methuselah, and is a sweet old boy.)
(The horse, not Jim.
Jim is a sweetie,
but he does not resemble Methuselah.)
The light was so spectacular
that Jim raced back into the house and grabbed the camera.
He just had to capture the beauty of the sunrise reflected in the frost.
Looking at the pictures made me realize how deeply influenced I am
by the color and quality of light that surrounds us.
See the colors in the frost photos?
Scroll down a little and there they are all over again!
This time, in our kitchen and dining room.....
We are working on re-upholstering the chairs.
(Because they are suddenly looking twitchingly disreputable).
Given that we have
a fairly extensive menagerie of furkids,
making cushions that can be whipped off and washed,
seems like a good idea.
AND
because I am a passionate small loom and off loom weaver,
I decided to weave them with spoolie cord.
Here's what I did:
I combined 4 and sometimes 5 strands of yarn
(cotton, and some wool that I had hand spun myself)
in 3 color combinations.
I rolled great big balls of cream/white, blues, and greens.
Then, I spoolknitted up the 3 different colors:

That's one of them.... the other 2 color combos missed the photo op.
I cut an 18 inch square of cardboard for the template.
I used small clamps to secure a length of the
blue spoolie cord around the outside edge of the
cardboard to form the border.
I cut it and stitched the ends together.

The 'Inspector General' is checking for quality control.
Then, I cut 7 lengths of spoolie cord
to fit inside the border and sewed their ends to
the border.
Here's how to cut spoolie cord:
Cut one strand of one stitch:

Pull the ends out of the stitches

Until you have pulled out a whole row, which will
separate the 2 halves of the cord.
Use the ends to stitch the loops to the border pieces.

Weave in more spoolie cord, cut and stitch the ends to secure....

And, Voila!
A cushion!
Make it bigger, and it's a rug.
Make it smaller, and it's a table mat.

Make it any size and your cat will love you.
Ms Minnou approves.
This means that it will stay clean for approximately 14 seconds.
sigh.
The things I do to keep my furkids happy......

Happy Spooling!
Hugs all round,
Noreen
