January 26, 2006Here's
My Heart.....

Valentines come in many shapes and sizes.
The best ones are dark chocolate.
The next best involve yarn.
(For those of us who are addicted to yarn, that is.....)
Have you ever woven a paper heart like this one?

Well, I have been thinking about how I could use
my own version of this technique to make a woven
spool knitted heart mat, or rug, or bag or.....
a Valentine!
So, with Lion Brand 'Big' in Panoramic Pink,
and 'Big Prints' in Spectacular Sunset,
and working on only 3 pegs of a large spoolie

spool 2 cords that are 21 inches long, 2 that are 17 inches long and 2 that are 7 inches long.

Fold the pink cords into an arch:

And stitch the ends
to one end of the longest multicolored one.
Take all the yarn ends from the pink one inside the pink cords.
Leave the end of the shortest pink cord free at the folded ends of the longer cords.
Stitch the remaining 2 multicolored cords to the lower, outside pink cord.

Weave them in and out of the pink cords.

Bring the ends of the 2 longer multicolored cords around into an arch shape.
Weave the shorter one, under over the pink cords, then the longer one.
Stitch the 2 shorter cords to the fold of the middle cords.
Stitch the ends of the multicolor cords to the pink cord.
You'll need to push the cords into position, as they'll want to sproing around on you.
Also, stitch the top 2 cords of the heart 'shoulders' together to hold them in place.
Take a stitch at the 'v' of the top of the heart to hold it in place, too.
Weave in all ends and trim them, if necessary.

Voila!
A heart!
One of my most favorite design elements ever:
Bringing together things I love -
yarn, spool knitting and weaving.
This one is going to be a Valentine for my Mom.
Betcha she doesn't wait till Valentine's Day to open it.
: o )
Happy Valentine's Day
and may your life be full of love
and chocolate
and yarn
and spool knitting!
hugs all round,
Noreen
