Spool knitted Magic Wands
A
spool knitted magic wand.......

I was surprised to learn that my Mom reads my blog.
(Hi Mom).
Makes me want to watch my mouth.
My sister
(bless her heart, for this and many mercies, too numerous to mention,
just let it suffice to say that she is a good egg)
prints it out for her.
Mom can't remember what it's called.
She calls it ,
'That-thing-that-you-write-that-makes-me-laugh-and-please-don't-stop-because-I-need-to-laugh".
It's that kind of a blog.
I figure that there are enough angry, unhappy people already,
and I don't need to make anyone angrier or unhappier.
(here's hoping, that is!!!!)
I would much rather find ways to bring a little light, a little delight,
a little healing.........
whether it's teaching a workshop on dollmaking as a healing art,
or writing a somewhat silly blog
about a cherished heritage fiber art
(that would be spoolknitting!)
: o )
it's all part of
finding my way
through
to being
'part of the answer',
rather than
'part of the problem'.
I hope.
Anyhow,
my Mom and I were talking on the phone,
and we were both feeling sad,
and Mom told me that she needs me to keep writing
'That-thing-that-you-write-that-makes-me-laugh-and-please-don't-stop-because-I-need-to-laugh".
: o )
and I thought about how nice it would be
to wave a magic wand that would bring comfort and joy,
and then ............
I decided that I should spool knit a magic wand or two.....
so, of course I did.
What do you need to spool knit a magic wand?
well, a sense of humor and a spool knitter....
and some bits and pieces:

and a hot glue gun, beads, cardboard stars, paint, chopsticks or other small dowels, charms, you know... 'stuff'....
I spoolknitted happily away while my husband, Jim

and his vunder trio played at a gorgeous gallery
last night for a couple of blissful hours:

They're not in a cage, that's a funky metal sculpture wall.
Anyhow, I sat, and listened,
and ate luscious food,
and talked to really nice people
and looked at very inspiring art
and spoolknitted magic wands!
Well, 2 strands of Lion Brand Lame' (Lamay, not lame as in 'halt and')
and, then, today,
after I was a very good girl
and got my projects shipped off to my editor
(on time to meet a very tight deadline)
I sat down, and made magic wands.........
three of them so far........
I can tell this is going to be an ongoing sort of a thing....

The one on the far left
began with the wonderful green glass bead
that my friend, Jorel, found at a bead show and bought for me (bless her heart!).
I stuck the end of the chopstick in the bead
(by the way, the chopstick is green, because I have been painting a bunch of furniture the loveliest 'heritage' shades of pale green and pale blue, and I used that chopstick to stir the paint.)
Anyhow, I glued the bead in, sanded the end of the chopstick
and slid the spool knitting up it like a very skinny sock.
Glued the cardboard stars in (who says a magic wand only gets one star?)
( I painted them and played a bit with color)
and then got out the charms.
The charm on this wand says: 'Live.....love.....laugh'.
I glued on a piece of misdirected beading that I meant well with but went madly off in all directions and ended up chucking it into the 'whatever' box.
It looks quite fetching on the wand. Just goes to show you.
I also glued on a little hand charm and a boot charm
(I had one hand and one boot.........
and have been wondering what kind of a doll
I would use these wonders on.
Now I know.)
I also attached other charms that say:
Believe
and
inspire.
The magic wand in the middle is for my Mom.
I used a beauuuuuuuuuuuuuutiful glass bead that reminds me of a maraschino cherry.
Because somebody loves them in dark chocolate.
and the star has a charm that says, 'faith',
because she's going through the hardest time right now........
and there's a rose on the back of the star, because roses are good..........
and at the end of her wand,
there is a sewing machine, and a thimble and needle and thread charm,
representing her mastery of needlework, and her love of quilting and sewing..........
I hope that when she holds it in her hands,
that she will remember magical moments in her life,
and that it will make her smile.....
The magic wand on the right
is for my daughter's boyfriend, whom I think the world of.
His star has a charm on it that says, 'hope'.
Because we all need that right now!
and on the other side of the star,
is an old button that I bought in a second hand store in Quebec City a couple of years ago.
I love the energy of old buttons -
each one tells a story:
This button came from the suit
that Uncle wore
at so and so's wedding,
and this button
came from the jacket
she wore on the first day
of her youngest child's entry
into the world of school....
The button is there to remind him (he's a writer)
to look for stories in unusual and obvious and unexpected places.
And then, to tell them.
At the end of his magic wand there is an extravagantly milafiore bead that I just love
and the Chinese lettering for the word,
'happiness',
which is what I wish him,
and everyone,
everywhere............
happiness........
even when you're sad.
believe in wonderful things..........
that's the truth of magic wands
with love and hugs
