The Uterus Project

A New Story
by Michelle Edwards

I have written about knitting healing shawls, tea and sympathy shawls, and a hundred pairs of mittens for cold, needy hands (twenty five more pairs to go!). I have knit dozens of chemo hats and a hundred or so preemie caps. All these projects are very dear to my heart.

Now I'd like to propose a new knitting project for knitters so inclined. For lack of a better name, I'll call it The Uterus Project...

Crafting with the Help of Lion Brand Readers

Mrs. Campbell, whose middle school Crochet Club and their preemie blankets was featured in February, writes "The results of your article have been so exciting.

"Now all the kids that want to crochet can! A suburban girl scout troop is bringing us twenty skeins of yarn next Tuesday. An author sent books for each kid and a Joanne gift certificate. I was able to buy yarn and Lion Cotton for them to make "burpies" and bibs. A woman even called from California to tell us the manager of her local yarn store put up the picture and request for donations!

"The kids are just so impressed with the kindness people have shown them. It has helped their self esteem and appreciation for the good that is in this world. This has been a most wonderful experience for them.

"We have a bulletin board full of emails and the girls are sending thank you notes to each person who donates and sends an an address. The girls and boys are pumping out preemie blankets and now that they have enough yarn they are making larger blankets that will go to the Variety Club summer camp or to shelters."

Do you have yarn or time to share? There are MANY schools and youth organizations that have posted needs to the Charity Connection.  Knitting and crochet is a skill for life and a great gift -- click here to search and find a group in your neighborhood.  Even a few hours can make a difference!

Thank you! Everyone in our club who wants to crochet now has yarn!
