KNIT-OUT • CROCHET TOO '99
A Personal View
Around the country, Knit-Out • Crochet Too '99 events brought out crowds to share, learn, and just enjoy. Expanding from last
year, local knitting and crocheting groups sponsored events in Chicago, Illinois; Lakeland, Florida; Tyler, Texas; Virginia Beach, Virginia;
Indianapolis, Indiana; and other locations. Wherever they gathered, the scene must have been similar to that in New York City, where more
than 7,000 people, ranging in age from four to 90 and beyond, came together in Union Square Park.
One-on-one lessons in knitting and crocheting were available, but all day long, just alongside the lesson tables, impromptu groups
gathered in chairs and even cross-legged on the pavement, as adults and children practiced newly-acquired skills together.
In addition to lessons, there were demonstrations; children's crafts; information on area yarn stores, classes, and guilds; booths
with information on publications and yarn companies' products; and free project sheets. An area was also available for the Craft Yarn
Council of America's Warm Up America! program, which provides afghans to the needy, nationwide.
There were also fashion shows where accomplished crafters and beginners alike showed off their creations, and shows with fashions
from magazines such as Knitters, Vogue Knitting, Family Circle Easy Knitting and Crochet, and Knit'N Style. There
was even a pet fashion show. The star of the latter was New York City Parks and Recreation Commissioner Henry Stern's dog, Boomer.
Commissioner Stern presented David Blumenthal, Lion Brand Senior Vice President/COO and Craft Yarn Council Chairman, with a City
of New York Proclamation, declaring Sunday, October 24, 1999: "Craft Yarn Council of America Day".
According to Blumenthal, next year there will be even more events nationwide: a national network of Knit-Outs with even
greater participation from local knitting and crocheting guilds.
