What’s New? –
September 2001
It’s September and that means it’s time for the
fourth Annual Knit-Out and Crochet 2001.
If you’ve never been a part of one, the Knit-Out is a four-hour,
free event sponsored by the Craft Yarn Council of America (CYCA), with the
help of volunteers, to celebrate knitting, crocheting, and yarn crafts and
to introduce them to a new audience.
Last year’s Knit-Out saw 32 events throughout the
United States, and the first international Knit-Out events in Canada and
Israel. This year, there will be even more events in the U.S., and one in
Belfast, Ireland!.
National Knit-Out Week (September 23 –30) will
feature many events and will wrap up in the Los Angeles area on Sunday,
September 30 at the Third Street Promenade in the Central Business
District, Downtown Santa Monica, from Noon-4:00 P.M. The fun for all ages at both
events will include:
• FREE personalized knit & crochet lessons
• Live fashion shows—including an Irish one brought by the organizer
of Belfast’s Knit-Out (one of the models is Miss Ireland!) and a “Woof
Wear” fashion show for dogs!
• “Show & Tell” your favorite knit and crochet projects
• The “Sweater Doctor”: 911
for that project that has you stumped
• Kids in Action yarn fun
• Meet Kaffe Fassett and other best-selling knit and crochet authors
• Demonstrations, displays, info on groups and classes
• Info on charity knitting and crocheting — bring along a 7" x
9" knitted or crocheted piece and be a part of the Warm Up, America!
throws program
Another Knit-Out that looks particularly exciting is
the one in Columbus, Ohio, which will take place at the Ohio Statehouse on
Tuesday, September 25, from 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.. Organizers have challenged the
Statehouse press to learn to knit! Scheduled
events include:
• Free beginners’ knit and crochet lessons,
including a take-home project
• Expert advice on knitting and crocheting problems
• Demonstrations of spinning roving into yarn and machine knitting
• Some of the newest and hottest happenings in socks
• Door prizes
During the week of September 23-30th,
Michaels Arts & Crafts stores are sponsoring Knit-Out & Crochet
events in their 650+ stores in the U.S. and Canada, and, on the afternoon
of September 23, Pacific Fabrics and Crafts is sponsoring events at their
stores in Washington State.
