WHAT'S NEW?

July 2000

Who will be the “Knitter of the Year 2000”?

Once again this year, Lion Brand Yarn Company is joining with Knitter’s magazine to honor one person as Knitter of the Year. The award, which was begun last year, comes with a $1,000 prize and is intended “To recognize one individual who works to further the craft of knitting, openly shares his or her knitting knowledge with others, contributes his or her time and resources to the craft of knitting, and demonstrates innovation in techniques or design.”

The first winner was “The Mitten Lady”, Rosie Marino of Chisholm, Minnesota (see our November “What’s New” for more details). This year’s millennial winner will be announced in October at Stitches East in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.

To nominate that special knitter in your life, the one who does so much for people and for the craft of knitting, you may write to:

The Knitter of the Year
XRX, Inc.
P. O. Box 1525
Sioux Falls, SD 57101-1525

Or e-mail nominations to: KnitterOfTheYear@xrx-inc.com

Nominations may be submitted by individuals or groups, companies, retailers, guilds, or associations.

For more information on Stitches East, visit the Knitter’s magazine website: www.KnittingUniverse.com

The crochet pattern for July Then and Now Crocheted Shawl is a re-working in MicroSpun yarn of a pattern that originally appeared in 1912 in the Lion Brand Manual of Worsted Work.  For all of you who have requested vintage patterns or their updates, this one's for you!

Our knit patterns this month have a nautical theme for the small sailor in your life:  a child's pullover with a stripes and anchors pattern and a matching sailor hat done in summery Kitchen Cotton yarn..  Our  Child's Knitted Anchor Pullover uses simple rib and stockinette stitches; the anchor is embroidered on the finished sweater.  And our  sea-worthy Knitted Sailor Hat tops it off.  Both are in machine-washable an dryable Kitchen Cotton.
